Movers & Shakers: Mariah, Paula & May Day
May 6, 2008

Mariah Carey jumped 500% on the Movers and Shakers list after reports surfaced an elope with Nick Cannon, who gained 400% this week. The pair first got together while on location in the Caribbean on March 26, reportedly Cannon was cast as the romantic lead in her new video "Bye, Bye." The romance was kept under wraps until Carey showed up at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 26 sporting an enormous engagement ring. Days later the couple were married at Carey's private estate in the Bahamas.

Paul Abdul gained 427% after her latest American Idol blunder. Abdul apparently was confused when series' producers decided to change the judging format from the usual evaluation of each contestant after singing to waiting until all five singers finished performing. When asked to review the first performance of Jason Castro, Abdul gave her opinions on two performances, even though each contestant had only sung one song. Fellow judge Simon Cowell also admitted the switch had been difficult, stating, "This was officially the strangest show we've ever done, but I like that. It's kind of a bit chaotic tonight."

May Day had searchers curious last week, rising 145%. May Day occurs on May 1 and is celebrated in many different countries for a variety of reasons. In several countries, May Day is considered International Workers' Day, or Labor Day, which observes the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. In the U.S. May Day is the celebration of spring, usually accompanied by a gift of flowers. One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers or other small gifts on a neighbor's doorknob.

Movers and Shakers: Boston Marathon, Star Jones and Stimulus Checks
April 29, 2008

The annual Boston Marathon gained 531% last week on our Movers and Shakers chart. Established in 1897, the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the most well-known road racing events. This year, the male winner Robert Cheruiyot won his fourth Boston Marathon, and Dire Tune beat out Alevtina Biktimirova by two seconds in the closest finish in the history of the women's race.

Star Jones made headlines this week, gaining 464% after she announced that she and Al Reynolds filed for divorce. "The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone's life that requires privacy with one's thoughts," Jones said in the statement. "I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman." Jones, 46, and Reynolds, 39, a banker, were married in 2004 in a lavish wedding, with supplies and services donated by corporate "sponsors" in return for publicity. Tabloid newspapers referred to her as "Bridezilla."

Curiosity about U.S. stimulus checks piqued last week, gaining 200%. The rebate check is in the mail; or so says the IRS. Depending on annual income, rebates will range from $600 for individuals to $1,200 for married couples. Tina Fey also gained 180% with her new movie Baby Mama debuting at number one in the box office this weekend, raking in $18.2 million.
