Early Warning: One Rapper, One Waif Teenyboppers and rappers were both hot tamales on the Lycos 50 during 1999. Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys were top 20 all year, and gangsta Tupac Shakur (dead these three years) was actually the most popular male in the business after one-year wonder Ricky Martin.
With that in mind we checked our search logs for a rapper and a teenybopper who look like hot prospects for 2000. What we found: DMX and Mandy Moore.
DMX made the scene in 1998 with the single "Get At Me Dog." He isn't unknown by any means -- he's recorded with Mase and LL Cool J, among others. But judging from the way queries have risen in the last few months, he could move up to rap's first ranks in 2000. We're guessing you'll be hearing a lot more about him.
If Mandy Moore doesn't look precisely like Britney Spears, she sure seems to be seeing the same barber. Her official site says: "She's an outgoing,fun-loving teenager who started out 'jumping on my bed and singing'...". Uh-huh. At any rate Moore has all the right teen heartthrob credentials, including a penchant for candy-striped innuendo and a home in Orlando where all those other teenybopper groups (including Britney and the Backstreets) were discovered. Even though Moore's only 15 she already has her own anti-Mandy site, a sure sign of future success. Keep an eye on her.
Tune in tomorrow for our 1999 finale, where we compare your searches to the "people of the year" from other media outlets!
