Top Fads of 2007
December 18, 2007

Poker leads as the number one fad of 2007 with MySpace taking the number two position for the second year in a row. MySpace's social networking rival, Facebook, comes in at number five, making the list for the first time. Facebook, which launched in 2004, has 58 million active users worldwide and continues to expand in popularity far beyond the college campus roots. Meanwhile, MySpace boasts over 200 million accounts. Will Facebook ever overtake MySpace's place as the top social networking website?

YouTube continued to be all the rage in 2007, leading to such unlikely celebrities as Chris "Leave Britney Alone!" Crocker, while Webkinz (plush toys that owners can "adopt online") rose above The Sims and Neopets in popularity.

Harry Potter, at number six, had quite a year in 2007. The last book of the Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" was published in July, ending the speculation over how the series would conclude. (Would Harry live? Was Snape really evil? It seemed as if these issues inspired more debate than the upcoming presidential election ... at least in our office.) The film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" was also released in July. After such a Harry-intensive summer, one may have thought that the craze would die down, but Potter talk continued into the fall and winter with J.K. Rowling (pictured) named as Entertainment Weekly's "Entertainer of the Year" and the release of "Order of the Phoenix" on DVD. In addition, Rowling "outed" Professor Dumbledore in the fall and auctioned a hand-written copy of "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" (a fairy tale referenced in "Deathly Hallows") at Sotheby's, which was bought by Amazon.com for $4 million.

Discussion about the Harry Potter books and characters will probably continue for years to come, as the books have transcended genre and became a beloved pop culture phenomenon.

The top fads of 2007 are:

  3. YouTube
  4. Runescape
  5. Facebook
  6. Harry Potter
  7. South Beach Diet
  8. Webkinz
  9. The Sims
