The Backstreet Boys are the most popular band of 1999, according to searches by Lycos users.
Call 1999 the year of the boy band. The Backstreets, 'N Sync, and 98 Degrees all rank in the top 10; the hot boy band of '97-98, Hanson, was barely heard from this year and still ranks #17.
If you aren't under 20, it helps to be over 50: who'd have expected the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead to be in the top 20?

Rookie of the Year Award: Blink 182. This scatology-friendly band seems to be on the fast track.
Bore of the Year Award: Nirvana. Dudes, five years later and counting.
Hot in '98, Not So Hot in '99: Beck, Hole, All Saints, Everclear.
Ones to Watch for 2000: Creed, Dixie Chicks, Dru Hill, LFO, Smash Mouth.
Where's the Country?: No country band even came close to the top 20. The Dixie Chicks would probably rank around #30, but other top country bands like Diamond Rio and Lonestar are far back down the dusty road. (Neil Diamond got twice as many queries this year as Diamond Rio.) Whatever country fans are doing, they don't seem to be searching the web.

Note: These rankings reflect all terms entered into the Lycos search engine by users between January 1 and Thanksgiving (November 25) 1999. Individuals (Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears) are not included in this ranking of bands. All spellings and search variations are included in these totals; for instance, searches for Backstreet Boyz and Backstreet Boys pics are counted as searches for the Backstreet Boys.
