Make it three years in a row for Britney Spears, who once again is the most popular female of the year according to searches by Lycos users.
In fact, the top four women of 2001 are the same as the top four women of 2000, although each of these women received fewer searches this year compared to last.
Here are the Top 20, with last year's rank in parentheses:
1. Britney Spears (1)
2. Pamela Anderson (2)
3. Jennifer Lopez (3)
4. Anna Kournikova (4)
5. Madonna (7)
6. Carmen Electra (8)
7. Angelina Jolie (-)
8. Christina Aguilera (5)
9. Martha Stewart (14)
10. Brooke Burke (-)
11. Oprah Winfrey (17)
12. Aaliyah (-)
13. Mariah Carey (9)
14. Alyssa Milano (13)
15. Jennifer Love Hewitt (18)
16. Anna Nicole Smith (-)
17. Jessica Alba (-)
18. Janet Jackson (-)
19. Shannon Elizabeth (-)
20. Trish Stratus (-)
TEEN DOWNTURN: Despite releasing their second albums, both Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore fell in searches in 2001. Instead, the trend for late 2001 leans towards female artists who write their own material, like Shakira, Nelly Furtado, and Alicia Keys.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Brooke Burke went from a small-time cable host and bikini model to the standard for Playboy covergirls.
COMEBACK OF THE YEAR: Halle Berry (#24), who pulled the fork out of her back by exposing her breasts in the movie Swordfish. She received three times as many searches in 2001 as she did in 2000.
FLASH IN THE PAN: Actress-turned-CNN-anchor Andrea Thompson (#38) got more queries than Nicole Kidman, Cindy Crawford, or Elizabeth Hurley.
HOT IN 2000, NOT SO HOT IN 2001: Former wrestlers Chyna (Joanie Laurer) and Sable (Rena Mero). Here's some advice to Trish Stratus: If somebody tries to convince you that you'll be much more successful if you leave the WWF, just say no. Also way down this year: Darva Conger, Celine Dion, and the overrated Cindy Margolis.
STRANGELY ABSENT: Martina Hingis is the second most-popular female athlete, but she's all the way down at #60 on the list of top women.
ONES TO WATCH 2002: Searches for Latina chanteuse Shakira have steadily risen over the past eight weeks... Actress Franka Potente, previously known for Run Lola Run, gets her first American starring role opposite Matt Damon in this summer's The Bourne Identity... Kirsten Dunst will be every fanboy's dream as Mary Jane in Spider-Man... If she is willing to pose, a Playboy appearance would put newly buxom WWF heiress Stephanie McMahon in the "Trish Stratusphere."
ONES TO WATCH 2001: We were very, very right about Angelina Jolie and very, very wrong about Rachael Leigh Cook and Tara Reid -- their movie Josie and the Pussycats bombed... We said that FOX football weather babe Jillian Barberie was one Maxim Magazine spread away from stardom, and she still is.
Monday we'll feature our fourth list, The Web's Top Fads of 2001. Find out if all your XFL are belong to the Klingerman Virus.
