Holiday Inn #1 with Web Users

We scanned the 25,000 top Lycos user queries for the names of hotels, motels, and lodging chains. The results, from the most-searched-for lodgings to the least, are below.

Each entry has a percentage ranking compared to the overall leader, Holiday Inn. The 14% ranking of Motel 6 means that for every 100 people who searched for Holiday Inn, 14 searched for Motel 6.

The full list:

100%   Holiday Inn
45%    Marriott
28%    Best Western
23%    Hilton
23%    Sheraton
20%    Hampton Inn
20%    Comfort Inn
19%    Hyatt
19%    Days Inn
16%    Radisson
15%    Ramada Inn
14%    Motel 6
13%    Embassy Suites
13%    Doubletree
11%    Holiday Inn Express
9%     Super 8
9%     Westin
7%     Red Roof Inn
6%     Residence Inn
6%     Fairfield Inn
6%     Quality Inn
5%     Bellagio
5%     Ritz Carlton
5%     Four Seasons
4%     Howard Johnsons
4%     Opryland Hotel
4%     Harrahs
4%     Courtyard by Marriott
3%     La Quinta
3%     Travelodge
3%     Wyndham

Holiday Inn is the clear leader in user interest, with more than twice as many searches as the Marriott chain and 10 times as many as Super 8. Holiday Inn's budget spinoff, Holiday Inn Express, ranks 15th on its own.

Best Western also makes a surprisingly strong showing, beating stalwarts Hilton and Sheraton. But what ever happened to Howard Johnson's? Once a cultural icon, HoJos barely registers. Another surprise is Embassy Suites, which ranks almost last among the mainstream business hotels.

Two individual hotels were popular enough to make our list: Nashville's Opryland Hotel and the fancy new Bellagio in Las Vegas. Another gambling-related chain, Harrahs, ranks 27th.

Note: all search spellings and variations are included in each hotel's total; for instance, the Quality Inn rank includes searches for Quality Inns and Quality Inn hotels. This list reflects actual terms entered into our search engine by Lycos users during the week ending November 13; it does not imply endorsement of these hotels by Lycos. Recent mystery terms explored:

Our resident movie dude, boards of the IMDB, thinks that HEATHER GRAHAM searches are due to the video release of Austin Powers 2. And who are we to say him nay?

PAINTBALL turns out to be quite interesting. Seems that some peace-loving gamers are creating paintball 'mods' for violent shooter games like Quake and Deer Hunter. Hence the searches. Tip o' the hat to user boards for this solution.

MIREILLE: User boards notes that Mireille Mathieu is a hot band in France. boards came up with another interesting theory: see the HampsterDance-type fireworks at mireille.com.
