"Kitchen Nightmares" and Celebrity Chefs
November 27, 2007

With celebrity chef Rachael Ray leading our list of Movers & Shakers this week with an 871% increase (perhaps from web users trying to figure out how to make Thanksgiving dinner in an hour) and Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver seemingly on TV every five minutes, it appears that the celebrity chef phenomenon is not going anywhere. Instead of simply staying in the kitchen, many chefs have become household names with media franchises to their credit. For example, when she is not appearing in commercials exclaiming that Dunkin' Donuts coffee is "fantabulous," Rachael Ray hosts a talk show, two Food Network shows, and has written cookbooks and launched a magazine.

I had the opportunity to speak with chef Joe Cerniglia, who will appear on the November 28th episode of Gordon Ramsay's program, "Kitchen Nightmares." On "Kitchen Nightmares," the notoriously prickly Ramsay helps flailing restaurants get back some business. Unlike their typical restauranteurs, Cerniglia is actually a quite well-respected chef himself, having served as executive chef at an exclusive New York steakhouse at the age of 23. At his New Jersey Italian restaurant, Campania, the food may have been great - Cerniglia makes his own cheese and changes the menu based on the season) - but he admitted, "I was struggling." When Ramsay and "Kitchen Nightmares" stepped in, even the thick-skinned Cerniglia was apprehensive over the prospect of dealing with Ramsay's fierce personality. "I had butterflies in my stomach!"

Cerniglia sees two sides to the current upswing in media attention and popularity to celebrity chefs. He remarked that growing up, when the other kids were watching the popular programs of the day, "I was watching Julia Child," and also commented that he is a big fan of the Food Network. However, he feels that the media attention given to some of these chefs has reached the point of oversaturation. Celebrity or no, he does credit Ramsay with the help he provided Campania. Check out Cerniglia's episode of "Kitchen Nightmares," airing on FOX at 9 PM ET on Wed., Nov. 28.
