Saturday Night Live Rides Election Wave The controversial 2000 election has dragged a number of topics onto the Lycos 50 in its wake, including the Drudge Report (#6) and Rush Limbaugh (#14). To those more political topics you can add one more: Saturday Night Live. Saturday Night Live has always gone up-and-down in popularity over its 25 year history, and it is definitely in an "up" period right now. Saturday Night Live searches have increased roughly 40% per week over the past five weeks, growing more popular with each passing week. Much of this popularity is due to the spot-on debate parodies broadcast in October. In fact, rumors have it that Al Gore actually watched SNL's first debate parody in order to prepare for the second debate. When he saw himself portrayed as obnoxious and confrontational, he worked towards becoming more conciliatory. Interestingly enough, we received no searches last week for the two actors who portray the presidential candidates, Darrell Hammond (Gore) and Will Farrell (Bush). Instead, the breakout star of this year's cast seems to be Jimmy Fallon, who is co-anchor of Weekend Update and plays a number of regular characters including Bostonite Sully (of "Nomaaaaah!" fame) and "Nick Burns, Your Company's Computer Guy." He also had a role in the film Almost Famous.
