Wranking the Wrestlers

PRO WRESTLING has a headlock on our search logs, or so it often seems. Dozens of wrassling terms make it onto the logs each week, and the WWF and Sable are rock-solid Lycos 50 mainstays. (Sable remains popular despite leaving wrestling months ago after a tiff with the WWF.)

So today let's list the top wrestling queries submitted by you, the surfing public. The three categories: leagues, women and men. Ready?

Leagues
1. WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION (WWF) -- the clear winner and champeen

2. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING (WCW) -- Avis to the WWF's Hertz

3. EXTREME CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING (ECW) -- a distant third

ONE TO WATCH: ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP. The UFC, which claims to be a rugged mix of martial arts and wrassling, is gaining some low-level interest with Lycos users. Could be a future contender.

Women
1. SABLE -- now known as Rena Mero

2. NITRO GIRLS -- dancing pride of the WCW

3. CHYNA -- looks a little like Xena, Warrior Princess

4. TERRI RUNNELS -- cigar-smoking wondergirl

5. TORRIE WILSON -- bodybuilder turned WCW star

6. DEBRA -- former Miss Texas USA

7. TORI -- Sable's former WWF protege

ONE TO WATCH: CHAE. Of all the Nitro Girls, she seems to be the one who's getting solo interest from web users.

Men
1. THE ROCK -- #1 most-requested wrassler

2. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN -- longtime fan favorite

3. BILL GOLDBERG -- signature move: the Jackhammer

4. STING -- not the musician

5. RAVEN -- big ugly guy

6. HULK HOGAN -- semi-retired, still popular

7. UNDERTAKER -- creepy goth-type character

8. BRET HART -- brother of the late Owen Hart

9. KANE -- masked marvel

10. JESSE VENTURA -- governor of Minnesota

11. CHRIS JERICHO -- also fronts a heavy metal band

ONE TO WATCH: THE ROCK. Sure, he's already #1 -- but the way this guy is moving up our charts he looks to be the next Hulk Hogan or Steve Austin. He's hot.

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mystery term:

    Mireille

Still no explanation for this popular term, excepting the beautiful Mireille Gleizes, Belgian pianist. She's got my sentimental vote, but she can't be the real object of your searches.

If you know who the hot Mireille is, please post a note on our boards. You'll be glad you did.

    Case Closed?

    Recent mystery terms explored:

Could ALISA searchers be looking for Alisa Flatow, the girl killed in a Gaza Strip bombing? boards thinks it may be so. Actress Alisa Reyes is another possibility, suggests boards.

A colleague suggests another angle: the odd Alisa Online lonely-hearts catalog of Russian women.

ROAST generated duelling theories of origin. On the one hand we have celebrity roasts for boards and the boards; on the other hand we have Thanksgiving boards.

Searches for BLEEK are probably aimed at rapper Malik Cox, aka Memphis Bleek, according to loyal user boards. Mr. Bleek has a new solo album on the market. To read more about him, click here.
