Top Toys 2002
November 14, 2002

It's time for our annual look at the nation's top toys. As usual, we're going to split the list, with a look at toys and game consoles today and specific computer and video games tomorrow.

Here are the most popular toy searches from the last month:

1) Playstation 2
2) Xbox
3) Yu-Gi-Oh! cards
4) Barbie
5) Nintendo Gamecube
6) Beyblade
7) Legos
8) Transformers
9) Zoids
10) Hot Wheels
11) Hello Kitty
12) Gameboy Advance

Just like last year, the game consoles are huge, and both Playstation 2 and Xbox have been climbing the Lycos 50 ranks over the past few weeks. Also like last year, the Gameboy Advance lags behind.

Just below the game consoles stands Yu-Gi-Oh!, a fad of Pokemon proportions this Christmas. Like Pokemon, it is a Japanese media juggernaut with a card game, video games, and a television show. We usually do not include the anime empires like Dragonball and Pokemon on the list because so few of these searches are specifically for toys and action figures. But the great majority of Yu-Gi-Oh! searches are for the card game rather than the cartoon.

Beyblade is another Japanese import, and like Yu-Gi-Oh! the fad is much more connected to the toys although there is a television cartoon. Beyblade is a modern twist on that most ancient of kids' toys, the top. Yes, that's right, kids are right now obsessed with a toy that when stripped of all the mythology is really just a simple spinning top. Kids can customize their own Beyblade tops and then compete to see whose top stays up longest and who can knock the other kid's top over.

Another hot toy here is Zoids, which we discussed in March. They're not quite as popular now as they were then, but they are still getting a ton of searches.

While there is no girls fad to compete with these massive boys fads, Bratz dolls are getting a number of searches on Lycos. Bratz is a line of five interracial dolls with interchangeable clothes and, according to the manufacturer, a "stylin' attitude." The line has been expanded this year to include new clothes and even male Bratz dolls.

One downward trend: the Leap Pad/Leap Frog line of educational toys made our list last year but is much less popular in 2002.

TOMORROW: Top computer and video games.
