Election 2002 in Review
November 13, 2002

Well, it took a long time for searches for Election 2002 to show up on the Lycos 50, but they finally appear this week at #5 as Americans go looking for results and analysis -- and, if they are Democrats, recriminations by the bucketful.

2000 Election showed up on the Lycos 50 a month ahead of time and then stayed on the list for 12 weeks thanks to the Florida nonsense. All three presidential candidates in 2000 made the Lycos 50, while no gubernatorial or senatorial candidate even stiffed the list this year.

Here's an interesting tidbit: unlike 2000, searches for news organizations like CNN and ABC News did not spike last week, despite the interest in election coverage. The generic search news didn't go up much either.

But right-leaning FOX News saw searches go up by 50 percent. Gloating conservatives, perhaps? Probably -- Rush Limbaugh searches doubled as well.

Here are the top 10 candidates to get searches last week, both winners and losers:

1) Jeb Bush (FL Governor)
2) Mitt Romney (MA Governor)
3) Sonny Perdue (GA Governor)
4) Jennifer Granholm (MI Governor)
5) Walter Mondale (MN Senate, lost)
6) Elizabeth Dole (NC Senator)
7) Shannon O'Brien (MA Governor, lost)
8) Norm Coleman (MN Senator)
9) Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (MD Governor, lost)
10) Erskine Bowles (NC Senator, lost)

We ran a similar list on October 30, and the results were fairly similar. Jeb Bush was #1 then too, but his opponent Bill McBride was right behind. Two weeks later he's fallen off the top 10, similar to how his poll numbers fell in the last two weeks before the election.

The candidate who appears much higher now than two weeks ago is Georgia's new governor, Sonny Perdue, who won in an upset to become the first GOP governor of Georgia since Reconstruction. The interest may be due to the Georgia flag controversy; in his campaign, Perdue promised to "revisit" the idea of returning the confederate flag as part of the state flag, but now that he is elected he is backpedaling a bit on that promise.

And here are the top 10 states to get specific election searches last week:

1) Michigan
2) Illinois
3) Florida
4) Maryland
5) Georgia
6) Texas
7) Minnesota
8) Ohio
9) Missouri
10) Alabama

All those Michigan searches, and searches for new governor Jennifer Granholm -- she's become one of the leading lights of the Democratic party. Could we be seeing the first woman president? Actually, nope. Granholm was born in Canada and can never run.
