A huge shakeup on the Lycos 50 this week, as Halloween searches make room for Christmas and the holiday movie season, not to mention the biggest video game we've tracked in the history of our list. This week's top ten features six items that didn't make last week's top ten.
KaZaA is #1 again, the first time a file-swapping program has hit the top slot a second time, but that won't last long. With Halloween (#32) behind us, the holidays are surging. Christmas (#3) will soon be the top term on the Internet and Thanksgiving is up 14 spots to #12. Associated searches like turkey recipes and Christmas trees are also on the rise.
In further holiday news, we spoke a bit too soon when we mentioned last week that Ramadan had yet to appear. This week it shows up at #26, and there's enough Ramadan interest to almost drag Islam back onto the list (it finishes #52).
VICE GRIP: From the spiritual to the material -- Grand Theft Auto Vice City (#4) is now the highest-ranking video game in the history of the Lycos 50. The previous high was #5 by the Final Fantasy game series last summer -- and that was because of a tie-in movie. Impending holiday sales also have Playstation 2 (#22) and Xbox (#41), the two main game consoles, moving up.
MILE'S AHEAD: The holiday movie season is warming up, with Harry Potter moving up to #6 in anticipation of this Friday's opening of Chamber of Secrets and James Bond arriving at #46. Most Bond searches ask for the man himself; only 20 percent of searches ask for the movie by its title, Die Another Day.
But those are the hot movies of the next two weeks. The hot movie of this week is Eminem's new film, 8 Mile. The king of rap is up to #7, and the film debuts on the list at #20. The film is so popular that the main single off the soundtrack, Eminem's "Lose Yourself," nearly makes the list on its own. "Lose Yourself" gets more searches than Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Pokemon.
MUSIC MAYHEM: If the Lycos 50 is any indication, record companies are having a lot of success this year in aiming big releases towards the holiday shopping period. Eminem leads a list of ten music artists on this week's Lycos 50. One big arrival is rap star Missy Elliot (#39), who is having a ton of success with her new single, "Work It." Elliot is the first female musician to make the Lycos 50 and wear a dress above a size two.
Another arrival on this week's Lycos 50 is country superstar Shania Twain (#36). Although she once peaked at #18 on the list, Twain hasn't made the Lycos 50 since July 2000. Now Twain is hot again, with four times as many searches as her country-pop rival, Faith Hill. And Shania on the rise means country music is on the rise -- the Country Music Awards finish at #57, nearly making the list.
Also just missing the list this week is Shakira, who falls off after 18 weeks but stays close at #54. And if that's not enough, a number of other artists are hanging around just below the Lycos 50, including Justin Timberlake (#64), Good Charlotte (#66), and Tupac Shakur (#63), who has yet another posthumous record coming out soon. Does the phrase "diluting the product" mean anything to his family?
KICKING ASS: The Republican victory in Election 2002 can't match the wild search traffic that accompanied the 2000 Florida debacle, but the election still gets enough searches to stand as this week's #5 topic online. Tomorrow we'll have an article discussing the specifics of Election 2002 searches.
SHORT SUBJECTS: The announcement of the engagement of Jennifer Lopez (#19) and Ben Affleck means more searches for both of them... WWE (#23) is currently hot because of a newly released magazine featuring pictures of the wrestling babes called Divas Undressed... Survivor Thailand is far from the Lycos 50 but the end of The Bachelor (#43) makes the list... Actress-turned-thief Winona Ryder nearly makes the list at #52.
NEW THIS WEEK: Election 2002, 8 Mile, mortgage rates, Ramadan, Shania Twain, Missy Elliot, The Bachelor, James Bond, New York Marathon.
DROPOUTS: Baseball (after 38 weeks), Shakira, costumes, pumpkins, Day of the Dead, Jackass, unclaimed money, Run-DM, Daylight Saving Time.
ONE YEAR AGO: Napster fell off the Lycos 50 after 88 weeks on the list. The late, lamented file-swapping program still gets plenty of searches, while four of its progeny are currently on the Lycos 50: #1 KaZaA, the rising eDonkey (#27) and WinMX (#37), and the fading Morpheus (#38).
TOMORROW: A closer look at election searches.
