Today we are introducing a new feature to the Lycos 50, in honor of our two-year anniversary. It's called the Lycos 50 Elite.

Our goal here is to give special recognition to those terms that have persisted on the Lycos 50. We also want to provide a page that gives a quick description of some of the most consistently popular terms on Lycos.

There are really two tiers to the Lycos 50 Elite. The first consists of the eight topics that have appeared on our list every single week since August 1999, when we began. The second tier consists of any topic that has appeared on the list for 50 straight weeks.

You'll now notice distinct Elite stars next to each topic included on the Lycos 50 Elite. Each year we'll add new topics that have crossed the 50-week barrier.

Other topics come and go on the list but the eight topics in tier one of the Lycos 50 Elite have real staying power with Web users because of the glitz, glamour and tabloid nature associated with them.

The entertainment topics constantly reinvent themselves, whether it is the introduction of new stars to the WWF or the removal of clothes from Britney Spears. Japanese cartoons have proven that they have staying power and media savvy that American cartoons don't have these days. And tattoos, well, let's just say that laser removal clinics will be a really nice growth industry in 2015.

The second tier of the Lycos 50 Elite is a good way to look at some of the other topics that have obsessed Web users in the last two years. If you think it is interesting now, imagine checking it out in five years. "Hey Dad, what was South Park?"
