The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.November 8, 1999

Monday Morning Headscratching

Questions we've asked this week at Lycos 50 headquarters:

Where's Furby?

Where's the annual frenzy over the hottest holiday toy? You know what we mean: Furby, Elmo, the Cabbage Patch Kids... we've been scanning our search lists but haven't spotted that one big rising star. Does this mean Pokemon is officially the fad of winter '99 as well as the fad of summer '99?

Where's Lou?

Lou Bega's novelty hit "Mambo #5" is at #3 on the Billboard charts after months of airplay. Yet last week Bega got fewer searches than the Library of Congress. He just hasn't made it as a Web phenomenon. Why not?

Why Won't Jenny McCarthy Go Away?

How does this woman remain in the Lycos 50? She's a popular pinup babe, yes, but she hasn't been a star since 1997. All the other pinup faves in the Lycos 50 at least have actual careers: Pam Anderson and Jennifer Love Hewitt are TV stars, Britney Spears (for all the jokes) is in her 43rd week on the Billboard charts, Jennifer Lopez is a singer and a movie star. If Sable has dropped from #14 to #38 since she ditched her day job, why hasn't the same thing happened to Ms. McCarthy?

Who's Building All the Houses?

Housing is a hidden hottie on the Internet. House plans got more searches last week than either "Brad Pitt" or "dinosaurs," and log homes is another frequent request. Put those two terms together and they'd actually be very close to ranking in the Lycos 50.

Are Airlines Underappreciated?

Despite the success of auctions, books and music, is air travel maybe the biggest Web success story of all? Airline tickets, plane tickets, cheap tickets, airline flights, air fares, airline reservations... these are all heavy search terms. And that's not counting the searches for individual airlines, ticket vendors, and online agencies like Preview Travel.

Who's That In the Kitchen?

Cooking and boxing got almost exactly the same number of web searches last week. What does that mean? And can the "Mike Tyson's Gracious Brunches" cookbook be far behind?

    Mystery Terms

Here's a strange term that's been popping up on our search logs lately:

    Bleek

Any idea why this has been a popular request lately? If so, please post a note on our boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed?

    Recent mystery terms explored:

LUTHERAN: Cheerful user Jon Reeves notes that the Lutheran church recently buried the hatchet with the Catholic church. Searches on the Vatican are up as well, so it seems we can stamp this one "solved."

Yikes! Wednesday's mystery term PAULUS produced two disaster-dealing explanations.

User boards says these are searches for Nostradamus maven Stefan Paulus, who predicted a comet would smack into Earth in September. (He may have blown the call, Paulus now admits.)

Or, as user boards suggests, people could be hunting for math whiz John Allen Paulos, who has lately been talking about the statistical probabilities of airplane crashes. Cheery group, those Paulu/oses.

User boards points out that JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT is featured in the latest Maxim magazine -- giving her the same boost Melissa Joan Hart got last month. People seem to be reading Maxim, or at least looking at the pictures.
