The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.November 4, 1999

Fargo: America's Hottest City?

Welcome to Thursday's daily report. Let's get right to the latest fast-rising terms from the Lycos search logs:
NESTICLE
NESticle is the current hot freeware emulator for NES, the Nintendo Entertainment System. (An emulator lets you play old cartridge-type video games on your PC.)

GILLIAN ANDERSON
Actress Gillian Anderson is making a comeback with our users -- perhaps on the news that she and Mulder will kiss in an upcoming episode of The X-Files.

GREEN BAY PACKERS
The Seattle Seahawks won the NFL's Monday night game -- but somehow the losing team is the one getting all the searches.

NAFTA
That old North American Free Trade Agreement is back in the news, thanks to the proposed Africa trade deal which would extend similar benefits to other nations. NAFTA is also a favorite whipping-boy of presidential candidate Pat Buchanan.

FARGO
Why Fargo? A certain performer will rock the house there this weekend.

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mystery term:

    Lutheran

We know what a Lutheran is, thank you. That's no mystery. The question is: why have searches for "Lutheran" suddenly risen this week?

If you know, please post a note on our boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Recent mystery terms explored:

Yikes! Wednesday's mystery term PAULUS produced two disaster-dealing explanations.

User boards says these are searches for Nostradamus maven Stefan Paulus, who predicted a comet would smack into Earth in September. (He may have blown the call, Paulus now admits.)

Or, as user boards suggests, people could be hunting for math whiz John Allen Paulos, who has lately been talking about the statistical probabilities of airplane crashes. Cheery group, those Paulu/oses.

User boards points out that JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT is featured in the latest Maxim magazine -- giving her the same boost Melissa Joan Hart got last month. People seem to be reading Maxim, or at least looking at the pictures.

CHESTER: Could these searches be for snack mascot Chester Cheetah? So says user boards. If they are -- why?
