Movers & Shakers: Fires, Saw, and the Red Sox
October 30, 2007

Gaining 800% in search activity, the California wildfires ravaged the Los Angeles and San Diego areas over the past couple of weeks. The Associated Press reports that the fires have massed 506,050 in acreage, destroyed at least 1,700 homes, and have left at least seven people dead. The fires began on October 21, and are among the worst in the history of the state. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven counties. An end is in sight, however. The fires are close to being fully contained, with the help of some cooler weather and calmer winds.

The latest movie in the "Saw" franchise, "Saw IV" gained 700% in search activity this week and slaughtered box office competition, grossing $32 million over the weekend. Steve Carell's "Dan in Real Life" came in second, earning $12 million. Clearly, audiences gearing up for Halloween were more interested in a serial killer sadistically torturing victims than the heartwarming story of a widower finding love again. Maybe if Steve Carell chopped up someone's lifeless body at some point during the film, it would have broken $15 million - eh, but maybe that would have been missing the point.

As they plowed through the Colorado Rockies to win their second World Series in four years, the Boston Red Sox gained 166%. On Tuesday, thousands of people lined the streets of Boston to celebrate their win and watch Jonathan Papelbon dance his version of the Irish jig with local punk band, the Dropkick Murphies. Now where will Red Sox Nation focus their ample energy? Spring training is only 5 months away - maybe Bostonians can work on cleaning up those little Big Dig problems in their spare time.
