Robert E vs. Spike Lee

Do Web users prefer the present to the past?

Below are famous names in 12 pairs: one name historical, one a modern entertainment figure. Your job: decide which got more user searches on Lycos last week.

Here we go:

(A) Historical

1. Samuel Clemens

2. John Paul Jones

3. Queen Elizabeth I

4. Henry Ford

5. Robert E. Lee

6. Ethan Allen

7. Andrew Jackson

8. Leonardo DaVinci

9. Alex. Graham Bell

10. Capt. James Cook

11. Susan B. Anthony

12. Henry Moore

(B) Modern

Roger Clemens

Paula Jones

Shannon Elizabeth

Harrison Ford

Spike Lee

Woody Allen

Janet Jackson

Leonardo DiCaprio

Alex Rodriguez

Rachael Leigh Cook

Marc Anthony

Mary Tyler Moore

The winners: 1-A, 2-B, 3-B, 4-A, 5-A, 6-A, 7-B, 8-A, 9-A, 10-A, 11-A, 12-A.

Call it a rout for the forces of history.

9-3 is maybe not an overwhelming lead, but some of the individual matchups are shocking: DaVinci over DiCaprio? Captain Cook over teen heartthrob Rachael Leigh Cook? Abstract sculptor Henry Moore over rerun queen Mary Tyler Moore?

There's no doubting that the tops of our weekly logs are dominated by the Pam Andersons and Darva Congers of the world. But despair not, champions of civilization: down in the web traffic trenches Susan B. Anthony is whacking salsa sensation Marc Anthony over the head with a protest sign, and crusty Samuel Clemens is hurling a broken bat at Roger Clemens.

By the way, the Clemens searches all happened last week, before Roger's Sunday night tantrum. But it's amazing that in the heat of the playoffs Samuel Clemens could beat his modern namesake -- and that's not even counting searches for Mark Twain.
