The Lycos 50 Daily Report
 The things you're searching for.October 23, 2000

New York, New York

Since today is a travel day for the Subway Series (although I?m not sure why they need a travel day to go across town) we thought we would share the top New York-related terms on Lycos over the last week.

Each term is ranked by its percentage among the Top 25, and we took out general requests such as New York and New York State.

Here?s the list:

  21.0%  New York Times
  8.7%   New York Yankees
  7.9%   Wall Street Journal
  5.5%   Hillary Clinton
  5.0%   New York Mets

  4.9%   Statue of Liberty
  4.8%   Broadway
  4.5%   New York Hotels
  3.4%   New York Stock Exchange
  3.2%   New York State Government

  3.1%   New York Lottery
  2.8%   Columbia University
  2.7%   Derek Jeter
  2.6%   Long Island Railroad
  2.5%   New York Daily News

  2.0%   New York University
  1.9%   Sex and the City
  1.9%   Jackie Robinson
  1.8%   New York Subway
  1.8%   New York Jets

  1.8%   New York Maps
  1.7%   Shea Stadium
1.7%   State University of New York (SUNY)
  1.5%   Rick Lazio
  1.5%   Brooklyn

Terms which just missed being on the list included the New York Post, the Empire State Building, the New Yorker, New York Giants, New York Public Library, and Bronx Zoo, as well as New York baseball figures Mike Piazza and Babe Ruth. Amazingly, we couldn?t seem to find any searches for New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in the past week.

Sex and the City seems to be the quintessential New York TV show, getting more queries than other Gotham programming like NYPD Blue and Law and Order. Jackie Robinson helps give some representation to that other New York baseball club, the late, lamented Brooklyn Dodgers.

After Brooklyn, the other boroughs rank: Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Shea Stadium, for some reason, is four times as popular as Yankee Stadium. The New York Jets are more than twice as popular as their football rivals, the Giants. Of course, some would regard those as New Jersey searches.

As far as morale-pumping songs go, Shea Stadium?s Who Let The Dogs Out out-polls Yankee Stadium?s New York, New York by about twenty to one. "Dogs" seems to have fully replaced that old chestnut Meet the Mets.
