Amanda-rama! Yesterday's mystery term, Amanda, called our attention to a pair of potential new stars with that name. One has her own show on Nickelodeon, the other has a show on the WB, and it looks like you'll be hearing more about them both. (For more details, see the "Case Closed?" box at right.)
Now onto the rest of today's rising queries:
|
 |
| Tonya | |
| Yikes! The world hasn't had enough of knee-whacker Tonya Harding. Her sort-of triumphant return to the ice this week in West Virginia drew lots of online interest. |
| | | Encyclopedia | |
| The grand old Encyclopedia Britannica announced it would put its entire encyclopedia online -- for free. The resulting tidal wave of traffic crashed Britannica's servers. |
| | | Dishwasher | |
| GE's recall of three million dishwashers -- the ones that might catch fire, don't you know -- caught a lot of people's attention. |
| | | Halloween | |
| The countdown to 31 October continues. Among the fastest-growing terms: carving, Elvira (still!), pumpkin, and vampires. |
| | | Death Clock | |
| Here's a creepy one: you give the Death Clock your date of birth, and it tells you when you'll die. Or rather, it returns your expected date of death based on actuarial tables. Just in time for Halloween. |

 | Mystery Terms |
 |
 | Today's mystery term:
MERCY
This term has cooled, but early this week it was extra-hot. My searches on the term turned up a lot of hospitals and courtroom stories, none of which seemed compelling enough to inspire queries. Ideas, anyone?
Post your explanation on our boards.

AMANDA: We have two winners here. Amanda Bynes is the star of The Amanda Show, a goofy comedy that just debuted on Nickelodeon. Actress Amanda Peet stars in another new show, Jack and Jill. Thanks to detective boards for the former tip, and inspectors boards and boards for the latter.
MARIJUANA wasn't a mystery term, but its rise up the Lycos 50 is attracting a lot of attention (including a story by Reuters.) Now cheerful reader boards writes in to suggest that the surge in dope queries is due to Mother Nature -- or more precisely, to growers harvesting their illicit crops before the first frost and turning their attention to growing indoors. We'll see what happens next week.
Correction: Regarding yesterday's report on Indian queries, Lycos 50 reader Sundar writes: "Hindi happens to be an Indian language and not directly related to the the Hindu religion -- except that they share the same word root and parts of their geography." We regret the error. | |
