Hooray for Bollywood!

Today let's glance in the direction of India. With the Indian population in North America growing -- thanks in part to the country's strong Web workforce -- we're seeing more and more India-related searches from our users. If you're trying to keep up with the action, here are some hot topics to watch:

Bollywood

Bollywood is the whimsical moniker of the Indian film industry. (It's based in Bombay, you see.) This is the most popular India-related query we get, after 'India' itself.

If you're a Bollywood fan already, you may enjoy the clubs club.

Kajol

Kajol -- just the one name, like Madonna -- is the leading Bollywood star on our search lists. Last week her name was as popular as the song title "Mambo Number Five." (Her February marriage to fellow actor Ajay Devgan was apparently quite a big deal, too.) Other stars we see, in rough order of popularity: Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit, and Salman Khan.

Kashmir

Kashmir is a divided political hot spot, vaguely reminscent of Korea or Berlin. The border war there between India and Pakistan has been going for decades.

Cricket

India appears to be the world's most cricket-mad country, with England and Pakistan close behind.

Hinduism

80% of Indians are Hindus, which naturally leads to plenty of searches on the topic. Amongst the popular queries: Hindi, Hindi songs, Hindi music, and Hindu gods. One seasonal entry: Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which will be celebrated in November.

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mystery term:

    AMANDA

This name has been rising on our charts for the last few days, but we don't see any Amandas in the news just now. Does anyone know who this might be?

Post your explanation on our boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Recent mystery terms appraised:

GOUDY: One explanation comes from friendly user boards, who says: "There's an expression in the Bavarian-German dialect which is spelled "Gaudi" and.. means something like great fun or enjoyment." With that spelling in mind, try www.gaudi.com. Genius!

But wait! Other possibilities are at hand. User boards thinks the Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi may be the topic. Both boards and boards came out in favor of the typeface and its designer, Frederic Goudy. ("Relief from the overused Times" font, says Rifmon.) boards suggests Yankee-inspired baseball card queries for old-fashioned Goudy Gum. Even retired sportscaster boards showed up on TV the other night -- but after the query rush started.

Well, it takes all kinds of Goudys to make up a world. For now I'm putting my money on the typeface as the key topic.

JUEGOS: Imagine my red face when cheerful reader Robert Bast pointed out that www.juegos.com is home to a well-known competitor. Ah, well -- there's some consolation in knowing that juego can also be loosely translated as "a joke."
