School Subjects Less Popular This Year We've been noticing a trend recently, or rather a lack of one. Academic subjects which dotted the Lycos 50 last year are receiving far fewer searches this year. Last year at this time the periodic table of the elements was #30, Greek mythology was #38, Shakespeare was #49, and science fair projects were all the way up at #22? having been on the Lycos 50 since early August. This year, none of these subjects are in the Lycos 50. Searches for science fair projects and Greek mythology are both down about 50 percent from this time last year. The periodic table and Shakespeare are down less, about 15 percent each. We simply have not seen the usual rapid rise in searches for these subjects that we have seen in the past Septembers and Octobers. This is particularly true for Shakespeare searches, which have stayed just about flat for the last few months. So, what's the story? If only one of these subjects was lagging, we might think that this was a fluke. But it seems that searches for academic subjects are taking a back seat to searches for news. Perhaps our schools are spending more time on current events, and less time on historical events. MONDAY: More tales out of school. * * * We just want to acknowledge that yes, Jessie Camacho, the Survivor contestant that we picked as "One to Watch," was voted off the show yesterday. Guess we spoke too soon, and we hope this doesn't start a "Lycos 50 Curse."
