Monday Morning Pop Quiz

Good morning and welcome to today's pop quiz.

Below are 10 items from last week's Lycos search logs. Your challenge: arrange them according to popularity, from most searched for to least searched for. (You'll find the answers at the bottom of today's report.) Are you ready? Begin.

Blonde jokes
Dancing baby
US Army
Greyhound bus
Elisabeth Shue
Amish
Pink Floyd
Russian girls
Chicken recipes
Radio Shack

While you're working, let's take a look at the lastest fast-rising terms:

Natural Disasters

Angry weekend for Mother Nature! Earthquakes rocked our search boxes thanks to the 7.0 temblor in the Mojave Desert. Hot terms included earthquake, geological and USGS (the US Geological Survey).

On the opposite end of the continent Hurricane Irene whipped up more storm queries, including NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmosphieric Administration), weather and tracking.

JonBenet

Still lots of interest in JonBenet Ramsey after a grand jury declined to indict anyone for her murder.

Phillip Morris

The tobacco firm announced last week that, gee, smoking may not be healthy.

Biomes

Biomes are ecological and vegetative zones, like deserts or rain forests. (Or maybe you knew that.) The term seems to be the latest academic buzzword. Other hot eco-topics recently: global warming and water pollution.

MacBeth

This must be the week when everyone's Shakespeare class gets to the bard's tragedies: MacBeth is moving up our search lists. So is Sophocles' cheery Oedipus.

Quiz Answers

Sorry, Ms. Shue: you're not quite as popular as chicken casserole. (Ouch!) But Radio Shack did beat out the Amish. The correct list, from most popular to least:

Pink Floyd
Blonde jokes
Radio Shack
Amish
Dancing baby
Greyhound bus
Russian girls
US Army
Chicken recipes
Elisabeth Shue

That's all for today -- tune in tomorrow for the newest weekly Lycos 50 list.

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mystery term:

    GOUDY

A nearly equal number of users spelled this query as GOWDY. Who or what is this? The closest we can come is typeface wizard Frederic Goudy, and he seems like a longshot. Any ideas?

Post those bright ideas on our boards.

    Recent mystery terms solved:

JUEGOS: Imagine my red face when cheerful reader Robert Bast pointed out that www.juegos.com is home to a well-known competitor. Ah, well -- there's some consolation in knowing that juego can also be loosely translated as "a joke."

Reader boards notes that FIGURINES may be a Christmas-related term, with online shoppers getting a start on their tchotchke shopping. boards suggests that figurines and STATUES may be related to the September unveiling of that huge Leonardo DaVinci horse statue in Milan.

More on HAMPTON: friendly correspondent Cwbyjnkes says that "the rock band Phish is releasing a 6 disc live box set. This release encompasses the two nights of concerts in their entirety that took place at the Hampton Colieseum in 1998."

Hampton may also be a baseball name, according to e-mail from B. Shepard. He notes: "Last weekend, the Astros were playing the Braves in the baseball playoffs. The Astros were led by pitcher Mike Hampton, who had an incredible year..."
