What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

You Go, Poe!

Get this: that bleak bard of Baltimore, Edgar Allan Poe, is second only to Shakespeare in classic author searches on Lycos this month. (See full chart below right.) That means Poe whups heavyweights like Hemingway, Twain, John Steinbeck and even feisty welterweight Emily Dickinson.

Poe is grand, sure, but is he really #2 material? And does this mean The Raven is replacing Tom Sawyer as everyone's favorite tale of charming Americana?

Now, gentle reader, here are the rest of our recent rising stars:

Derek Jeter

The Yankee shortstop and former Mariah Carey beau has been catnip for mouseclicks during baseball's playoffs. (Carey, incidentally, just tied the Beatles for most weeks atop the pop charts.)

Pakistan

It's a coup! Pakistan's army tossed out prime minister Nawaz Sharif before Sharif could toss out army chief Pervez Musharraf. Pakistan has The Bomb, which adds a certain spice to the proceedings.

Ellen

Famously coupled actresses Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche told a crowd of cheering Vermonters last weekend that they want to get hitched there once the state approves same-sex marriage.

Escher

The academic year is in full swing, and that means M.C. Escher posters back up on dorm room walls. "Escher" is also a programming language, but M.C. seems the more likely search target here.

Crosby

Geezer band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young have announced their first tour in 25 years. Why now? "We had to wait for another presidential impeachment and an unpopular war,'' quipped Stills. Nevermore!

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mystery terms:

    BANJO

    JUEGOS

Juegos looks like a Spanish term, but a search of Spanish-English dictionaries online turned up nothing. Anyone speak Spanish out there?

I know what a banjo is, so hold those sarcastic cards and letters. The question is: why the sudden boom in banjo searches?

Bright ideas should be posted on our boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms tackled:

Reader boards notes that FIGURINES may be a Christmas-related term, with online shoppers getting a start on their tchotchke shopping. boards suggests that figurines and STATUES may be related to the September unveiling of that huge Leonardo DaVinci horse statue in Milan.

More on HAMPTON: friendly correspondent Cwbyjnkes says that "the rock band Phish is releasing a 6 disc live box set. This release encompasses the two nights of concerts in their entirety that took place at the Hampton Colieseum in 1998."

Hampton may also be a baseball name, according to e-mail from B. Shepard. He notes: "Last weekend, the Astros were playing the Braves in the baseball playoffs. The Astros were led by pitcher Mike Hampton, who had an incredible year..."

STEAK may be yet another query related to carbohydrate diets, guesses the boards. Apparently fleshy protein figures prominently in those low-carbo meal plans.

An alternate theory is offered by boards, who says that the DVD of the film The Matrix contains a secret code word at the end -- STEAK -- which can be used on the film's website. The Matrix jumped to #34 on the Lycos 50 last week, which makes this sound even more likely.
