What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

Falling Leaves, Rising Sox

Angels and apples, leaves and the Sox have been on your minds lately, according to our search logs. Here's a roundup of some of the fast-rising terms of the last few days:

Fawcett

She's back. Charlie's Angels heartthrob Farrah Fawcett just signed up for a guest-starring role on Ally McBeal. She's also a guest on the David Letterman show tonight. Last time she was on Letterman she acted crazy, which is possibly why interest is high now.

Leaves

Leaf-peeping season has come to New England. We're also seeing a heavy run on other nature terms: ecology, wildlife, waterfalls, endangered species, even Yellowstone. Has Mother Nature finally got web access?

Kraft

This one's a bit confusing. We think these queries are for New Age hottie Dean Kraft, a self-described "laying-on-of-hands healer." (His publisher claims he kills cancer cells with his bare hands and has treated Yoko Ono and Ethel Merman.)

A less exotic possibility: people are simply hunting for Kraft Foods to get candy apple recipes for Halloween.

MegaMan

MegaMan is yet another Japanese animation success. It's a Capcom video game-turned-TV show, and seems to be having something of a renaissance thanks to a newer edition of the game, Megaman X.

Sox

All those New England leaf-peepers have had one eye on baseball, it seems. The playoff series between the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians drew plenty of queries, with the Sox getting the lion's share of interest. For info on the upcoming Sox-Yankees series, see our major league baseball roundup.

    Mystery Terms

Here are two fast-rising search requests which have us baffled:

    POK

    UNDERWATER

Is "Pok" some kind of shorthand for Pokemon? Are all those college football players hunting for courses in underwater basket weaving?

If you know, please tell us on the boards.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms discussed:

Hampton may be a baseball name, according to e-mail from B. Shepard. He notes: "Last weekend, the Astros were playing the Braves in the baseball playoffs. The Astros were led by pitcher Mike Hampton, who had an incredible year..."

"October 11 (was) THANKSGIVING day in Canada," writes reader boards. He was the first of several users to point out that this probably explains the rise in Thanksgiving queries mentioned in last Friday's report. We'll keep an eye on the term this week.

STEAK may be yet another query related to carbohydrate diets, guesses the boards. Apparently fleshy protein figures prominently in those low-carbo meal plans.

An alternate theory is offered by boards, who says that the DVD of the film The Matrix contains a secret code word at the end -- STEAK -- which can be used on the film's website. The Matrix jumped to #34 on the Lycos 50 last week, which makes this sound even more likely.
