The Strange Popularity of Fifth Third Bank The Lycos 50 has covered lots of things in its two years of existence. We have written about all manner of celebrity from actors to singers to sports stars. We have written about movies and TV. We have written about news, and about medicine, and even about furniture.
We write about these things because Lycos users search for these things. But we've never written about the subject we're writing about today. That's because we've never before had so many searches for a bank.
Yes, that's right, a bank. And not a huge, well-known, international conglomerate, but a smaller (though very successful) regional bank: Fifth Third Bank.
We've scratched our heads trying to figure out why Fifth Third Bank is so popular. We know that the growth is steady and real. It began in early July and has increased at roughly 13 percent a week for the last three months.
We spoke to the folks at Fifth Third Bank, trying to figure out the reasons why they have seen a surge of Internet popularity since the summer. They told us about their 28 straight years of consecutive increased earnings. They told us about how they have 1000 locations in six states, primarily Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. They told us how Fifth Third Direct offers business customers a chance to see all their accounts online, including both business-related and personal-related accounts.
We even learned where the bank's name comes from. Once upon a time, Bank of the Ohio Valley merged with the Third National Bank, which then merged with the Fifth National Bank.
None of which probably means a hill of beans on an Internet usually more concerned with celebrity than commerce. So we'll chalk this one up to "great mysteries of Lycos." If you have any idea what's going on, feel free to email us.
