Time for the Lycos 50's annual look at the top Halloween costumes. This year, the trend in costumes is quite forceful -- as in The Force. America's trick-or-treaters are going Star Wars crazy.

For the first time since we started checking Halloween costume searches each year, Renaissance/Medieval costumes do not rate as the top costume search. In fact, if you add up the specific Star Wars costume searches such as Jedi, Anakin, and Jango Fett, Star Wars costumes get twice as many searches as any other costumes over the past month.

Also hotter this year: superheroes, with lots of Spider-Man and Wonder Woman searches joining the usual Batman costume queries. Two big movie franchises are also big -- Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter -- and for some inexplicable reason we're getting far more searches for pirate costumes than we have in years past.

On the other hand, belly dancing costumes and clown costumes are getting fewer searches than in the past. In addition, despite a successful summer film, we're getting fewer searches for Scooby-Doo costumes this year than we did last year. Other hugely popular fads that don't seem to be popular Halloween costumes include the Japanese animated wonder twins, Dragonball and Yu-Gi-Oh!
