What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

 The things you're searching for.October 8, 1999

One to Watch: Mena Suvari

20ish actress Mena Suvari caused some ripples on our summer search lists when she co-starred in the teen flick American Pie. Now that she's playing the object of Kevin Spacey's desire in American Beauty, the queries are piling up. It's a bit early to say she's the next Lillian Gish, but Suvari does seem to be clicking with the surfing public.

Now on to today's rather unusual group of rising stars...

Carbo-Oprah

Carbohydrates are -- again! -- the fastest-rising search query on Lycos, with Oprah Winfrey close behind. (See yesterday's report for details.) Alert user Qwert e-mailed us to point out that Oprah is also being mentioned as a political candidate, notably (and unbelievably) as running mate to Donald Trump.

Alex Lowe

Alpine climber Alex Lowe was just killed in an avalanche in Tibet. Lowe was considered by many to be the world's best active climber. We have intense on-the-spot coverage from our partners at MountainZone.

Brasil

We're guessing this is lotto fever. Brazil's largest-ever lottery jackpot now stands at 60 million reais -- $31 million if you're playing along in the U.S. The spelling -- 's' rather than 'z' -- probably indicates Latin surfers.

Buenos Aires

Also in South America: a sudden rise in queries for Buenos Aires. Likely explanation: reaction to the Jewish grave desecrations there last week. We've also seen a rise in queries for cemetery -- though that could actually be a Halloween-related query.

Heller

Heller Financial made a deal on Monday to sell off part of its business. We've seen quite a surge in Heller queries the last few days -- surprising for such an unglamorous company.

Thanksgiving

Ever wondered when most people start thinking about Thanksgiving? The answer is: this Wednesday. Thanksgiving queries are surging even though the holiday is seven weeks away. Can Christmas be far behind?

    Recent mystery terms dissected:

NAVAHO searches may be from viewers of a History Channel program titled "Navajo Code Talkers," says user boards.

Interest in MELANIE could be due to the new album release by Melanie "Mel C" Chisholm of Spice Girls fame, according to user boards.

TONYA HARDING. Scary news: she's back. Cheerful user AlyssaLitoff boards that "Tonya Harding has decided to make a comeback in the professional skating world." And boards that Tonya is "skating in some competition in Middle America somewhere."

Regarding DURAN, cheerful correspondent Jeff Chapman writes: "Try Chris Duran, a popular pretty boy type Spanish singing artist... Maybe has a new single out?" We're not sure about the single, but he's right about the pretty boy part.

Also, we may have discovered what old rockers Duran Duran are up to these days.
