What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

Carbo-Loading With Oprah

You don't often see the polysaccharide family topping search lists, but that's where we are today -- thanks to Oprah Winfrey. Take a look at our recent hot search terms:

Carbohydrates

Yes, carbohydrates is our fastest-rising search term today. The term got ridiculously hot after Oprah featured the "Carbohydrate Addicts" diet book series on her show. (And there are a ridiculous number of the books, too.)

Also suddenly hot is Atkins -- presumably Dr. Atkins, who has his own carbo-counter book. Many searchers seem to be misspelling his name as "Adkins" -- unless there's another Adkins out there we don't know about.

Oprah

Oprah herself jogged up our search logs this week. It could be the carbo frenzy, and it could be due to her online charity auction last weekend. (One Texas dude bid over $50,000 for lunch and yoga with the chat diva.) If you're Oprah-hungry yourself, try these simple Winfrey links.

Savannah

Definitely not Oprah-related. The E! cable channel just ran a biography of adult film star Savannah on its soapy "True Hollywood Stories" series. Searches shot up. (Unless you think everyone's actually looking for Savannah, Georgia.) You won't find much on the actress in a search on Lycos -- we're family friendly, don't you know.

Mets

The '99 version of the 'Miracle Mets' snuck into baseball's playoffs on Monday with a win over the Cincinnati Reds. Also up is ESPN, presumably due to the network's heavy baseball coverage.

Pumpkin

Here's the latest Halloween query to get hot. Interesting how these holiday terms have run: first we saw a rise in simply Halloween, then in costume items, then parties, and now pumpkin.

The other possibility, of course, is that Oprah just announced her own low-carbo pumpkin pie recipe.

    Mystery Terms

Here are three terms heavily requested recently, and we have no idea why:

    MELANIE

    HAHN

    NAVAJO

Ideas, anyone? If you know why these terms are suddenly popular, please speak up on the boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms dissected:

TONYA HARDING. Scary news: she's back. Cheerful user AlyssaLitoff boards that "Tonya Harding has decided to make a comeback in the professional skating world." And boards that Tonya is "skating in some competition in Middle America somewhere."

Regarding DURAN, cheerful correspondent Jeff Chapman writes: "Try Chris Duran, a popular pretty boy type Spanish singing artist... Maybe has a new single out?" We're not sure about the single, but he's right about the pretty boy part.

Also, we may have discovered what old rockers Duran Duran are up to these days.

Two astute scribes suggested that the rush on GUNS could be traced to the back-from-the-dead appearance of Guns n' Roses. The group's first album in years is due sometime this fall. Tip o' the Lycos 50 cap to Jeff Chapman and to Jon Reeves of the IMDB.

TITANIC queries could be the result of Gloria Stuart's book tour, suggests user boards Stuart (who played the 104-year-old dame in the film) has just written an autobiography, "I Just Kept Hoping."
