What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

 The things you're searching for.October 6, 1999

Early Warning: Blink-182

Hipster alert: Rolling Stone calls the music of Blink-182 a "hard-driving thrash sound, suitable for surfing, skating and snowboarding scenes." (Snowboarding IS still hip, isn't it?) The band's suavely-titled new album, "Enema of the State," tells you all you need to know about their approach. If our search logs can be trusted, Blink-182 is on the way up.

Some of the other terms you've been searching for the past few days...

Jesse Ventura

The wrassler-turned-governor is in hot water for calling religion "a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people." The guv'nor made his remarks in an interview with Playboy magazine, the same place where Jimmy Carter once admitted he'd lusted after women in his heart. Ventura also publicly advised Arnold Schwarzenegger to stay out of politics, saying "It won't be worth it to you."

The Rock

Minnesota, here's your next governor! Rising up our search logs is The Rock, wrassling's latest overstuffed personality. He just opened his own web page, which seems to be generating heavy interest.

Rugby

The Rugby World Cup '99 kicked off last weekend in Wales, and Web users are clearly interested. (Where else do you see scores like "Samoa 43, Japan 9"?) For more info, try Georgetown U's rugby links page.

Digimon

Digimons aren't new, but somehow the search requests keep growing. Digimons are an electronic version of the Pokemon card game; you hook your keychain-sized electonic 'monster' up to your pal's monster, and the two of them fight it out. The winner gets stronger and the loser sulks electronically. If you want to know more, try the Digimon Realm.

Search Log Oddities

Briefly noted in last week's search logs...

Wicca got more searches than Sarah Michelle Gellar
Jokes got over twice as many searches as sports
Log homes got more searches than Holiday Inn
Walmart got more searches than Cindy Crawford

    Mystery Terms

Here are two terms that have been heavily searched for recently, and we have no idea why:

    HAHN

    NAVAJO

With Hahn I can only think of Jessica Hahn, and I find no news stories about her. Navajo has me baffled, unless there's some connection with the Native American museum that opened up in DC recently.

Ideas, anyone? If you know why these terms are suddenly popular, please speak up on the boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms dissected:

TONYA HARDING. Scary news: she's back. Cheerful user AlyssaLitoff boards that "Tonya Harding has decided to make a comeback in the professional skating world." And boards that Tonya is "skating in some competition in Middle America somewhere."

Regarding DURAN, cheerful correspondent Jeff Chapman writes: "Try Chris Duran, a popular pretty boy type Spanish singing artist... Maybe has a new single out?" We're not sure about the single, but he's right about the pretty boy part.

Also, we may have discovered what old rockers Duran Duran are up to these days.

Two astute scribes suggested that the rush on GUNS could be traced to the back-from-the-dead appearance of Guns n' Roses. The group's first album in years is due sometime this fall. Tip o' the Lycos 50 cap to Jeff Chapman and to Jon Reeves of the IMDB.

TITANIC queries could be the result of Gloria Stuart's book tour, suggests user boards Stuart (who played the 104-year-old dame in the film) has just written an autobiography, "I Just Kept Hoping."
