Hot Documentary: Beneath the Veil As we noted yesterday, searches regarding terrorism are beginning to recede, making way for the old standby topics to climb the Lycos search logs once again. But some terrorism-related terms are still drawing increasing interest.
Among those subjects is the treatment of women in Afghanistan, and the British documentary that tells the story of the Taliban's horrific treatment of women: Beneath the Veil. The documentary was originally created for Britain's Channel 4 but has been airing constantly on CNN for the last two weeks.
The documentary was done by reporter Saira Shah, an English reporter of Afghan heritage who went undercover in Afghanistan with hidden camera to take pictures of the squalid conditions and the government oppression. Perhaps the most-talked about segment of the program is one filmed by women (not Shah) inside Afghanistan, as the Taliban publicly executes its citizens in a soccer stadium for crimes ranging from theft to homosexuality.
This week, Beneath the Veil received more searches than Tom Cruise or the Dave Matthews Band. Saira Shah was more popular online than slugger Barry Bonds.
We also received a number of separate searches such as Taliban treatment of women that addressed the plight of women in Afghanistan. As we wait to see what happens between our army and the Taliban, Afghan society is clearly a subject on the mind of a lot of Lycos users.
