What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

 The things you're searching for.October 1, 1999

One to Watch: Anne Geddes

Australian photographer Anne Geddes specializes in elaborate cutesy-baby photos. Some of her shots may seem a tad sweety-cakes -- and others are just plain disturbing -- but judging by our search logs Geddes has a growing following. She also has a raft of books and calendars out this fall; if you haven't seen her work yet, we're betting you will soon.

Fast Risers

The following terms have also been rising briskly recently...

Dino Crisis

New from Capcom, the electronic game Dino Crisis is a spinoff of their Resident Evil series. (Capcom calls it the "survival horror genre." ) Comes complete with raptors, gunplay, etc., etc. Very hot the last 10 days.

GetRight

GetRight is a software utility for downloading files off the Web. A beta version of the latest edition was just released.

Cakewalk

Another software winner: Cakewalk helps you record and manipulate audio right on your desktop. (Check here for a download.) Cakewalk just released a new version of its Pro Audio 9 software, which apparently accounts for the rise in interest.

Quilts

Get this: quilts have been hugely popular with Lycos users lately. (See the new bonus list below right.) Last week the word "quilts" got more user searches than "New York" or "Madonna" or even "baseball." Can that be right? And if so, does this mean Home Ec is making a comeback?

    Mystery Terms

Oh dear. Queries are rising for

    Duran

The only really familiar Durans are has-been boxer Roberto Duran and has-been supergroup Duran Duran. Surely neither is making a comeback? Or is there some other Duran we haven't heard of?

If you know the Duran scoop, please clue me in on the boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms answered:

Two astute scribes suggested that the rush on GUNS could be traced to the back-from-the-dead appearance of Guns n' Roses. The group's first album in years is due sometime this fall. Tip o' the Lycos 50 cap to Jeff Chapman and to Jon Reeves of the IMDB.

TITANIC queries could be the result of Gloria Stuart's book tour, suggests user boards Stuart (who played the 104-year-old dame in the film) has just written an autobiography, "I Just Kept Hoping."

FROGS. Here's another take on this ongoing puzzler: reader boards writes, "Unfortunately people have been finding a lot of bizarrely deformed frogs lately." (The message also includes a link to some very odd deformed frog photos.) Could this be the cause of the rush on frogs?

Earlier, users Cole and Brigtoofar suggested that hurricane sufferers may be wondering how to handle boards. If frog searches continue next week, we'll know that's probably not it.

The BENJAMIN is a brand-new hotel in New York City, notes user boards, who also points out that (yoops!) the details can be found on our very own site.
