One to Watch: Samantha Cole

Three weeks have now passed since the terrorist attacks on America, and the question is being asked: When will America return to normalcy? Here at the Lycos 50, we ask the same thing about our list, and the searches of Lycos users in general.

Well, one sign of the return to normalcy are the growing searches for that old pre-September 11 standby of Web fame, the pop princess. And the latest pop princess to be garnering searches is Samantha Cole.

The interesting thing about the Cole searches is that Cole herself does not have a new album out. She's getting attention because of her appearance singing alongside reggae star Shaggy in his new video "Luv Me Luv Me." And from what we can tell, that video is not getting a lot of play on MTV; instead, its popularity stems from high rotation on Canada's MuchMusic.

"Luv Me Luv Me" is a remake of a duet between Shaggy and Janet Jackson from the soundtrack to the 1998 film How Stella Got Her Groove Back, with Jackson replaced by Cole. The video features Shaggy and Cole performing the track in a mansion, while Shaggy juggles all the dates he has with various women in the house. He is Mr. Smooth, isn't he?

Over the last five weeks Samantha Cole searches have grown at a remarkably steady rate. They've roughly doubled each week, from just a handful of searches to as many as popular rocker Kid Rock.

Cole herself did have a self-titled album back in 1997. It was more treacle than TRL, though, with songs by Diane Warren, master of the sappy ballad, and a duet with 80's refugee Richard Marx. Her new album is apparently in the works, and her website lists new songs but not a date. When it comes out, eventually, will she move towards more Britney-like bombshell status?

Thanks to her duet with Shaggy, her name is out there -- now she has to capitalize.

TOMORROW: The New Lycos 50.
