What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

 The things you're searching for.September 29, 1999

One to Watch: Powerpuff Girls

The Powerpuff Girls are crime-fighting cartoon kindergarteners whose motto is "Saving the world before bedtime." Their show is in its second season on the Cartoon Network. Last week Lycos got more user searches for the Powerpuffs than for Dr. Seuss or Fatboy Slim (or even Walt Whitman). To bring yourself up to speed, try The Powerpuff Girls or Katie Kaboom's homage.

Fast Risers

These searches have also been popular in the past few days:

Harry Potter

Perhaps you saw him on the cover of Time two weeks ago. Harry Potter is a fictional teenage wizard and star of his own much-acclaimed book series. (Like the Powerpuff Girls, Harry is supposed to appeal to adults and kids alike.) The third book in the series was just released in the US. And now it looks like we'll have a Harry Potter movie.

Costumes

We're getting a rising tide of searches on Halloween costumes. (Hard to believe that many people plan ahead.) For general Halloween information, take a look at Tripod's Halloween links.

Witch Trials

On the same horrific theme: September has given us an abundance of searches on the Salem Witch Trials. Your guess is as good as ours here; it could be Halloween-driven curiosity, or clever teachers may be assigning it as a good creepy autumn research topic. Or maybe it's just a backlash to the angel craze. We'll see if the trend continues in October.

Apples

You may not be the type to search for fruit on the Internet, but someone's doing it: apples have been a hot search term in September. These queries could be aimed at the computer manufacturer, of course, but we'd expect those searches to be for "Apple" rather than "apples." (If you ARE looking for info on the new iBook, try this Wired News story. Just make sure you don't look too girly.)

And in case this is yet another Halloween search, here's a recipe for caramel apples.

    Mystery Terms

    Balloons

    Plumbing

These two terms have been extra-popular in the last week, and we have no idea why. (And with "plumbing" we're not sure we want to know.)

Ideas, anyone? Drop us a line on the boards.

For previous mystery terms, visit the Lycos 50 archives.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms answered:

TITANIC queries could be the result of Gloria Stuart's book tour, suggests user boards Stuart (who played the 104-year-old dame in the film) has just written an autobiography, "I Just Kept Hoping."

FROGS. Here's another take on this ongoing puzzler: reader boards writes, "Unfortunately people have been finding a lot of bizarrely deformed frogs lately." (The message also includes a link to some very odd deformed frog photos.) Could this be the cause of the rush on frogs?

Earlier, users Cole and Brigtoofar suggested that hurricane sufferers may be wondering how to handle boards. If frog searches continue next week, we'll know that's probably not it.

The BENJAMIN is a brand-new hotel in New York City, notes user boards, who also points out that (yoops!) the details can be found on our very own site.

"GELLER is almost certainly a misspelled Gellar," according to the friendly Jon Reeves of the IMDB. He points out that Sarah Michelle Gellar's movie Cruel Intentions has just come out on video.
