 The things you're searching for.September 27, 1999

Early Warning: Shakira

Heads up: here comes the "Latina Alanis Morissette". 22-year-old Shakira Mebarak has been a pop star in Latin America for years; her recent album Donde Estan Los Ladrones made it to the top of the Latin charts. Judging from our search logs she's now heating up in the US -- plus she has an English-language album due out this fall.

Fast Risers

These searches have been extra-popular the past few days:

Ryder Cup

Americans make an amazin' comeback against Europe in the Ryder Cup golf matches.

Equinox

The autumnal equinox arrived to kill summer on September 23rd. These searches could also be for controversial multi-level marketer Equinox International.

Lacrosse

Charged with assaulting a female student: the goalie for lacrosse powerhouse Johns Hopkins. More details: Kyle's Lacrosse Links.

Parton

Dolly Parton was just inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, plus she has a new bluegrass album due out in October. At the same ceremonies last week, Shania Twain was named country entertainer of the year.

Judd

Ashley Judd's movie Double Jeopardy hit screens on Friday. For fans: Ashley Judd photos.

Mayhem

The video game WCW Mayhem went on sale last week. ("Complete with pyrotechnics and theme music," according to ads.) For more info, try Tripod's games pod.

    Mystery Terms

Why are so many people searching on atomic clock and atomic time? Could be Y2K fever, sure, but these sound more specific than that.

Notions, anyone? Drop me a line on the boards.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms solved:

The BENJAMIN is a brand-new hotel in New York City, notes user boards, who also points out that (yoops!) the details can be found on our very own site.

"GELLER is almost certainly a misspelled Gellar," according to the friendly Jon Reeves of the IMDB. He points out that Sarah Michelle Gellar's movie Cruel Intentions has just come out on video.

A new take on FROGS comes from users Cole and Brigtoofar. They suggest that boards -- and the recent web queries are hurricane sufferers wondering how to handle the hoppers.

CINDY MARGOLIS just appeared on "Suddenly Susan" where she was described as the "hottest woman on the Web," according to user boards. Plus she's going to be on the UPN series "Shasta McNasty," reports user boards. And she was just on "WCW Smackdown," says user boards No wonder she's popular.
