We've noted earlier that lyrics are big business online. This week we got to wondering: whose lyrics get requested most?
It would seem logical that whichever bands get the most lyric requests are either 1) the greatest rock poets of their generation or 2) nearly impossible to understand.
Which is it? Judge for yourself. Here are the 25 artists whose lyrics were requested most by Lycos users last week:
1. Eminem
2. Nelly
3. Green Day
4. Bon Jovi
5. Incubus
6. Nirvana
7. Pearl Jam
8. Destiny's Child
9. Papa Roach
10. A Perfect Circle
11. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
12. Madonna
13. The Beatles
14. Blink 182
15. Christina Aguilera
16. Pink
17. DMX
18. Creed
19. Third Eye Blind
20. Tool
21. The Baha Men
22. Pink Floyd
23. Lil' Bow Wow
24. 2ge+her
25. Leann Rimes
Any trends to spot there?
"Rap Lyrics" has been on the Lycos 50 at times -- mainly due to the naughty lyrics, we've supposed -- and that popularity is upheld by the one-two finish of Eminem and Nelly. But overall only 4 of the top 25 fit that genre, with DMX at #17 and Lil' Bow Wow at #23. That's hardly a grand slam.
And what does it mean that only four of the top 25 lyric favorites are women?
There seems to be a great lyrical interest in big rock 'n roll bands of the early 1990s: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Green Day, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all made the top 25. Toss in The Beatles and Pink Floyd and you could say there's a definite bias toward old groups. (With fans old enough to have forgotten the words, perhaps?)
A few oddities: the Baha Men (#21) have been hot all summer thanks to their novelty hit Who Let the Dogs Out. And yes, that is MTV's phony boy band 2ge+her at #24. "Phony" doesn't actually apply any more; the group started out as a gag but now seems to be a hit with the same girls who love 'N Sync and the other boy bands being parodied. Go figure.
