The Return of Karaoke?

Earthquake-stricken TAIWAN
Latin rapper FROST
Controversial software BLEEM
Fad-that-won't-die KARAOKE

These are some of the fastest-rising terms on Lycos in the last few days. For more details, let's take a quick look at each:

Taiwan

The death count is now over 2000 in Tuesday's earthquake in Taiwan. Surfers have hit the web for info, just as they did for the big earthquake in Turkey last month. For the latest news and links, we've created a Taiwan flash page.

Frost

You might think this is a cold-weather query, but we suspect these searchers are really looking for aging rapper Frost. Known as "Kid Frost" in his younger days, he's now called "The Godfather of Latino rap" by his label. His new album "That Was Then This Is Now, Vol. 1" is just out. Never heard him? (Us neither.) Try a Frost MP3 search.

bleem

The name sounds straight out of Dr. Seuss. But bleem (yes, small 'b') is actually a software emulator which lets anyone play Sony Playstation games on their pentium PC. Sony's not happy, natch -- it's been suing bleem since the software launched in March. That hasn't stopped gamers from seeking bleem online. In fact, as mentioned yesterday, we've seen a jump in all gaming queries in the last few weeks.

Karaoke

Say it ain't so! Yes, karaoke is making a run up the Lycos search charts. We also notice a run in Karaoke VCD queries, so perhaps that newer format is what's driving the interest. If not, we have no idea why karaoke should be suddenly a hot topic.

If you're a fan, try this list of karaoke links. Or please, visit the boards and explain why Karaoke is still kicking.

Today's Bonus Stat

For the week ending September 18, more Lycos users searched for "Vanilla Ice" than for "Elizabeth Dole."

    Mystery Terms

    Today's mysteriously hot search item:

    Benjamin

A school-year rush on Mr. Franklin, perhaps? Doesn't seem quite likely. Or even stranger, could there be a medical connection between Ben Franklin and yesterday's term gout? We're stumped.

We're also still wondering about Juliet, by the way.

Do you know why any of these three terms might be hot right now? Please drop a line to the boards.

A new take on FROGS comes from users Cole and Brigtoofar. They suggest that boards -- and the recent web queries are hurricane sufferers wondering how to handle the hoppers.

CINDY MARGOLIS just appeared on "Suddenly Susan" where she was described as the "hottest woman on the Web," according to user boards. Plus she's going to be on the UPN series "Shasta McNasty," reports user boards. And she was just on "WCW Smackdown," says user boards No wonder she's popular.

SOMERSET is the New Jersey county that got walloped the worst by Hurricane Floyd, according to boards

LAUNDRY is the name of an up-and-coming band headed by former Primus drummer Tim Alexander, according to user Contort.
