The Other Women of the Decade
September 23, 2005

The Lycos 50 - Tracking pop culture, one search at a time.

As Lycos continues the celebration of its 10 - year anniversary, this week we announced the top 50 search terms from Sept. 1995 through the week ending Sept. 17, 2005. Lycos was first to market with a weekly countdown of most popular internet search topics, when it introduced The Lycos 50 on Sept. 15, 1999.

By now we hope you know that beyond a shadow of a bad botox injection, Pam Anderson (#1) reigns supreme as the most- searched person, place or thing for the past 10 years. We call Pamela Anderson "the patron saint" of The Lycos 50. The other dynamic women that made our list were (and tend to be web mainstays): Britney Spears, Princess Diana, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kournikova, Janet Jackson, JonBenet Ramsey, Selena, Mariah Carey, Carmen Electra, Christina Aguilera, Madonna and Oprah Winfrey.

Today we thought about the other women who almost made the list but regardless pull at our heartstrings. In honor of these other women; check out the talented singers, actresses and athletes that have made an impression on you over the past ten years. Plus we personally adore any female list that doesn't have Paris Hilton anywhere near the top.

Fading but still popular: Sable
It's a little confusing: RENA MERO used to be Sable, the buxom bombshell pro wrasslin' star. But in 1999 she sued the World Wrestling Federation and went back to being just plain Ms. Mero. Mero settled out of court and returned to the WWE in 2003 for a short stint. Currently Mero is designing clothing.

Country Diva: Shania Twain
The Lycos 50 is littered with pop and rap stars, but Shania Twain is the only country regular -- and she hasn't been on the list in quite a while. That could change this fall when Twain heads an all-female ensemble joining the desperate vixens of Wisteria Lane. Her new song, "Shoes," is the debut single from an upcoming soundtrack featuring music inspired by the hit ABC series Desperate Housewives.

Youngest Star: Natalie Portman
Proves that the force is (still) with her as she secures her spot on our list. And has the juice to return a lot in the next decade.

What-ever-happened to: Gillian Anderson or Shannon Elizabeth. Their popularity in the early part of 2000 helped them land a spot on our list but what have you done for us lately?

Here are the other top 30 women most requested by Lycos users for the week ending September 17, 2005:
