Web Women Whup Men

Women were surprise hotties this weekend in two traditionally male-dominated arenas: boxing and the movies. Introducing, in this corner...

TODAY'S HOTTIES

Boxing

Saturday night's big welterweight brawl between Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad drew heavy searches on boxing. Trinidad won the fight, but our users were more interested in the beefcakey de la Hoya. And both were beaten in rising interest by Mia St. John, the female featherweight who beat Kelly Downing on the undercard. St. John is featured in Playboy magazine's November issue, which may play some teensy part in her popularity.

Preston

Actress Kelly Preston stars in the new flick "For Love of the Game" which was #2 at the boxoffice this weekend. Bad news for Kevin Costner, who is supposed to be the flick's big star: Ms. Preston is getting all the Web interest. (The two have the "sexual chemistry of a term paper" according to E! Online.)

Foo

Last week Goo, this week Foo. The Foo Fighters concert at the Gravity Games 10 days ago drew surprisingly strong user interest all last week. The band also picked a new guitarist in August, which may be helping. The Foo Fighters are led by Dave Grohl who, as you may know, was part of the now-legendary band Nirvana.

Floyd

Hurricane Floyd is still hot, but queries have shifted from weather forecasts to damage reports. Among the emerging terms of the last few days: disaster, damage, conditions, flood, plus Wilmington and Greensboro (both North Carolina cities). President Clinton tours North Carolina on Monday. The Lycos Floyd wrap-up has still more details.

Early Warning: James Bond

Another zillion-dollar payday is in store for James Bond if user searches are any indication. In August we noted a small surge of interest in the latest 007 thriller, "The World Is Not Enough," which premieres November 19. Now that the final trailer is in theaters we're seeing another bump. It's a star-studded affair, with Pierce Brosnan as Bond, the ubiquitous Judi Dench as M and Monty Python alumnus John Cleese as Bond's latest gadget guy. Also prepare for a surge of interest in this year's Bond babes, Denise Richards and Sophie Marceau, both of whom are already Web pinup faves.

    Mystery Terms

These two women are getting mysteriously heavy traffic lately:

    Bette Midler

    Cindy Margolis

Ideas, anyone? Margolis was in "Austin Powers," but that's been a while now. Was Bette on TV?

If you can shed light on any of these terms, please drop a line to the boards. Thank you.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms solved:

SUNGLASSES could be due to the upcoming boards according to astute user Knowbuddy.

LAUNDRY is the name of an up-and-coming band headed by former Primus drummer Tim Alexander, according to user Contort.

THUNDERBIRD: Ford is rumored to be working on an experimental version of this classic car, notes Jklehe. And user New Revolution suggests that Thunderbird is the name of a popular business school.

JOANNE: For Joanne Rowling, author of the 'Harry Potter' book series featured on the cover of Time Magazine this week? So suggests reader boards.
