One year ago, the attack on America changed the way people used the Internet. One year later, the memory of that event brings many of the same topics back into prominence.
September 11 is #1 topic on the Internet this week, with World Trade Center is #2. Other September 11-related topics that make the list include American flag (#11), New York City (#17), and Osama bin Laden (#23).
Here are the 12 September 11-related topics with the most growth in searches over the past four weeks, although only three of them make the Lycos 50:
1) Cantor Fitzgerald (up 2060%)
2) "God Bless America" (up 1667%)
3) FDNY (up 1390%)
4) "Proud To Be An American" (up 1180%)
5) September 11 (up 1170%)
6) Al-Jazeera (up 840%)
7) World Trade Center (up 630%)
8) Taliban (up 580%)
9) American Flag (up 550%)
10) Al-Qaeda (up 467%)
11) Star Spangled Banner (up 420%)
12) Pentagon (up 380%)
Also doing well this week: FBI, Statue of Liberty, Nostradamus (or as Bobby Bacala would say, "Quasimodo"), and The Gettysburg Address, which was read by New York Governor George Pataki at a World Trade Center ceremony.
And let's not forget about the upcoming War: Part II. Over the past four weeks, searches for Iraq are up 460 percent, searches for Saddam Hussein are up 670 percent, and searches for United Nations are up 270 percent.
SCARY TIMES: This week costumes (#9) joins Halloween (#7) in the top 10 as people get ready to scare each other six weeks from now. Lycos has its 2002 Halloween Shopping Guide up now, so check it out for Halloween costumes and information plus free screensaver and wallpaper downloads.
OTHER NEWS: Although the Lycos 50 is dominated by September 11 searches, there are other new terms. Perhaps the most interesting is Rebekah Revels (#50), erstwhile Miss North Carolina. Revels had won the crown, resigned when an ex-boyfriend claimed he had nude photos of her, and then sued when she asserted that pageant officials had forced her resignation.
In the end, a judge ruled that Revels can't have her position back; runner-up Misty Clymer will represent tobacco country in the Miss America pageant. The whole sordid affair, plus the fact that nude pictures were involved, led to a lot of Internet searches.
SHORT SUBJECTS: School is back in session, as Greek mythology (#45) makes its first appearance of the fall and Cliffs Notes (#48) turn up for the first time since 2000... A new documentary called Biggie and Tupac is the reason for the return of Tupac Shakur (#47) to the Lycos 50... The NFL (#3) reaches its all-time non-Super Bowl high, but with most drafts over fantasy football (#37) drops 30 slots... American Idol drops to #49, but winner Kelly Clarkson is up to #60... A violent altercation between astronaut Buzz Aldrin and moon landing conspiracy theorist Bart Sibrel nearly puts the Apollo 11 mission on the Lycos 50 (it's #73).
NEW THIS WEEK: American flag, New York City, Osama bin Laden, Powerball, Greek Mythology, Tupac Shakur, Cliffs Notes, Rebekah Revels.
DROPOUTS: The Sims (after 16 weeks, but it should return soon), Vin Diesel, Napster, skateboarding, Atkins Diet, Spider-Man, U.S. Open, Jerry Lewis.
TOMORROW: Color me impressed.
