Dissing the Dolphins?

Football has been flying high for days, but Miami gets no respect. Meanwhile, Hurricane Floyd continues to weigh wetly on the public's brain. It's time for...

TODAY'S HOTTIES

Football Teams

Since last Monday night's game we've noted a slightly odd phenomenon: plenty of searches on Broncos but few for the Dolphins, who (after all) won the game. Maybe the Denver quarterback squabble is grabbing user interest. Whatever: football teams have been hot all this week. In rough order of rising user interest, they are: Cowboys, Broncos, Packers, Eagles, and Cardinals. The Cowboys results could be skewed by the condemned Texan who mentioned the team in his final statement.

Handspring

According to a Wired News story, Handspring "unveiled a handheld on Tuesday that can be turned into a MP3 player, mobile phone, pager, or even a heart monitor." (Cell phones are bad enough: please don't monitor your heart in public.) Handspring is a newish company started by former inventors of the Palm Pilot. Here's another story with more details about the new handheld, known as Visor.

Options

What's up with this term? The obvious inference is stock options, and indeed we've also seen a recent rise in trader and stocks. So why the mid-September rise in interest? Perhaps everyone's finally back from summer vacation and ready to trade again.

Floyd

The flood of Hurricane Floyd queries continues. Just to recap our useful links: InfoPlease has a swell hurricane roundup. Our Lycos Weather center is found right here. Over here is the latest news flash. And ready or not, we're seeing plenty of searches on Floyd's successor, Hurricane Gert.

Early Warning: 5ive

The boy band 5ive isn't exactly new -- they've been a hit in Britain for two years -- but now they seem to be raising the teen humidity level across the Atlantic. (See the Top 7 Boy Bands list at right.) That's not a misspelling, by the way: the band spells it "5ive," though some people simplify the thing and just spell it "Five." For more info from a fan, try Kelly's 5ive World.

    Mystery Terms

These terms are getting heavy traffic lately and we have no idea why:

    Aristotle

    Coatings

    Somerset

Like Beowulf, Aristotle could conceivably indicate searches by hundreds of intellectual schoolchildren. But we have doubts.

If you can shed light on any of these terms, please drop a line to the boards. Thank you.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms solved:

SUNGLASSES could be due to the upcoming boards according to astute user Knowbuddy.

LAUNDRY is the name of an up-and-coming band headed by former Primus drummer Tim Alexander, according to user Contort.

THUNDERBIRD: Ford is rumored to be working on an experimental version of this classic car, notes Jklehe. And user New Revolution suggests that Thunderbird is the name of a popular business school.

JOANNE: For Joanne Rowling, author of the 'Harry Potter' book series featured on the cover of Time Magazine this week? So suggests reader boards.
