Canoe-ing with Noaa's Ark

A pleasant day to you. It's a wet one in the Eastern US, a sore one in parts of Canada, and a yellow one for the Beatles. We're talking, of course, about...

TODAY'S HOTTIES

Arthritis

Looks like it's true: celebrities DO raise awareness. Earlier this week news got out that retired Canadian hockey god Wayne Gretzky has osteoarthritis and may be planning to become a spokesman for the illness. And since then we've seen a sudden jump in queries for... arthritis. Good luck, Gretz.

Canoe

Speaking of things Canadian: Canoe (Canadian Online Explorer) seems to be hot lately. Canoe is a news-heavy info-page with the emphasis on the Great White North. Of course "canoe" searchers could be looking for watercraft. But we've seen enough related searches (like "www.canoe.ca") to convince us that the website is the one whose popularity is growing.

The Beatles

A combination of little things, apparently: first the remaining Beatles relaunch their Yellow Submarine. Then a new Beatles movie (starring Aidan Quinn as Paul McCartney) is announced. Then McCartney shows up at last week's MTV Awards. Finally, John Lennon's guitar sells for 140,000 pounds. Result: a cheerful bump in Beatles traffic.

Noah

These slightly befuddled surfers (and there are plenty) seem to be looking for NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which TV forecasters pronounce as "noah". Given the topic at hand you've got to love the misspelling. Or maybe they really are looking for an ark-building FAQ.

Other busy hurricane search terms this week: Floyd, storm, Weather Channel, radar, tracking, satellite, National Weather Service, emergency, Intellicast, doppler. WRAL (Raleigh, N.C.) seems to be especially popular. And of course, there's plain old weather.

    Mystery Terms

These terms are getting heavy traffic lately and we have no idea why:

    Somerset

    Sunglasses

    Juliet

Somerset is a town in Manitoba with "major hog production". But surely that can't be what people are after?

If you can shed light on any of these terms, please drop a line to the boards. Thank you.

    Case Closed!

    Recent mystery terms solved:

LAUNDRY is the name of an up-and-coming band headed by former Primus drummer Tim Alexander, according to user Contort.

THUNDERBIRD: Ford is rumored to be working on an experimental version of this classic car, notes Jklehe. And user New Revolution suggests that Thunderbird is the name of a popular business school.

JOANNE: For Joanne Rowling, author of the 'Harry Potter' book series featured on the cover of Time Magazine this week? So suggests reader boards.

LIL: Almost certainly an homage to lady rapper Lil' Kim, who showed up at last week's MTV awards in an attention-grabbing outfit.
