As we noted yesterday, Halloween costumes was last week's most popular Halloween-related search by Lycos users. By far: nearly half of all Halloween searches were for costumes.
Which got us wondering: what will be the most popular costumed characters for this Halloween?
We've scanned our search logs for any queries including the word "costume." The 25 most-requested costumes, from most popular to least, are below.
1. Medieval costumes
2. Renaissance costumes
3. Batman costumes
4. Sailor Moon costumes
5. Belly dance costumes
6. Fairy costumes
7. Vampire costumes
8. Cleopatra costumes
9. Disney costumes
10. Wizard of Oz costumes
11. Batgirl costumes
12. Skeleton costumes
13. Mermaid costumes
14. Astronaut costumes
15. Princess costumes
16. Power Rangers costumes
17. Anime costumes
18. Star Wars costumes
19. Scooby Doo costumes
20. Pokemon costumes
21. Disco costumes
22. Wonder Woman costumes
23. Star Trek costumes
24. Viking costumes
25. Clown costumes
Medieval and Renaissance were far and away the most-requested costumes -- but we don't actually think they have much to do with Halloween. Those are more likely role-players looking for an outfit for their next big Renaissance faire or joust. (Same may go for item #5, belly dance costumes.)
So those terms aside the message is: look for Batman and Batgirl at your door this Halloween night. (How can that old standby Batman still be so popular? We don't know. Superman costumes got no searches at all.)
The caped crusaders are closely followed by Sailor Moon (#4), the popular Japanese cartoon. Here, at least, she has the upper hand on Pokemon (#20).
On the surprising side: what's with Cleopatra costumes (#8)? Why the Queen of the Nile? And does anyone really dress up as the Power Rangers (#16) any more?
It's comforting to see some old favorites still strong: vampires, fairies, skeletons, Dorothy and the Tin Man. (Pehaps by now Star Wars even counts as an old favorite, eh?) It's hard to imagine what exactly a Scooby Doo costume would look like, unless you plan to go as Velma.
In case you're curious about relative volume, Batman costumes got about 10 times as many searches as Viking costumes. You're likely to see 4 Batmen on your porch for every skeleton, and 2 Batgirls for every Captain Kirk, if people actually wear the costumes in the numbers they search for them.
Remember: you read it here first.
