While football, tennis, and the anniversary of September 11 all get plenty of searches this week, it is comedy legend Jerry Lewis (#26) who draws the most new attention online.
Last week was Lewis' annual telethon for muscular dystrophy, and while the telethon set a record for money raised, that wasn't what made news. The 76-year-old Lewis made enough news on his own when he appeared both on the telethon and on Larry King Live with his face bloated and swollen due to steroid medication he takes for pulmonary fibrosis.
The interest in Lewis this week doesn't even include searches from Sunday, when he became ill just before going on stage at a London charity performance and had to cancel.
IDLE IDOL: We're as shocked as you can imagine, but American Idol (#14) actually drops three spots in our rankings this week. Winner Kelly Clarkson doesn't make the Lycos 50, either, although she gets five times as many searches as runner-up Justin Guarini.
MEMORIES: The anniversary of last year's terrorist attacks is clearly garnering a lot of interest from Lycos users. September 11 is up to #5 and will likely hit #1 next week. World Trade Center is up to #10. The American flag makes it to #53, nearly making it back on the list as well.
As for our next war, searches for Saddam Hussein are now four times what they were a month ago. Searches for Iraq have doubled over the same period.
THE SLOW FALL: Dragonball falls to #3 this week below KaZaA (#1) and the NFL (#2). This continues a slow descent that began in April. Dragonball was once so dominant that it could get 50 percent more searches than any other topic, but now it is just one of a handful of topics competing for the top spot.
HOT E-MAIL: This week's quickly circulating piece of Internet folklore involved the Nimbus 2000 broom toy from Harry Potter (#32). We got a few searches for this toy, which has received some interesting reviews. Apparently it has a feature that has accidentally become quite popular with young girls.
SHORT SUBJECTS: This week represents the first time that WWE (#35) has been below #30, including when it was WWF... We can tell gamers are looking forward to the next installment of the popular Grand Theft Auto (#28) series, because 40 percent of GTA searches are for Grand Theft Auto Vice City... Let the backlash begin; this week we started getting searches for anti-Avril Lavigne (#17) sites.
NEW THIS WEEK: Jerry Lewis, skateboarding, Atkins Diet, Spider-Man.
DROPOUTS: Pokemon, Martha Stewart, California lottery, MTV Video Awards.
ONE YEAR AGO: The death of Howard Stern sidekick Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf highlighted a Lycos 50 article that nobody read because of the events that took place that morning.
TOMORROW: September 11 revisited.
