Serena, the Bewitching Teenager
September 4, 2002

This week's Lycos 50 seems lackluster, with only one item making the list that has never appeared before. But a closer look shows significant trends as summer turns to fall.

The one brand-new, never seen item this week is tennis star Serena Williams (#33). Williams made waves at the U.S. Open (#10) with a sleek black catsuit outfit instead of the usual white shirt and skirt. Yet she still can't get ahead of search queen Anna Kournikova (#8).

With football and tennis leading the way, sports terms are very big on this week's list. NFL (#6) and fantasy football (#7) switch places, but continue to drive tons of searches. The opening week of college football (#34) also makes the list. News of the almost-but-not-quite strike moves baseball (#18) up nine spots, and NASCAR (#23) and golf (#29) are also popular.

FALL RISES: Autumn brings with it three trends, two of which show up this week. The first is the memorial for September 11 (#15), which climbs 35 spots this week. World Trade Center (#36) also returns to the Lycos 50.

The second trend is the ascent of holiday searches. Halloween is already at #24 with costumes at #40. And Christmas shows up at #48, earlier than ever.

The third trend, the arrival of school-related terms like periodic table and Greek mythology, should be just around the corner.

KAZAA ASCENDS: This week marks the first time atop the Lycos 50 for new #1 KaZaA. The hot file-swapping program of the moment follows in the steps of Napster (#49) and Morpheus (#22), each of which also made it to #1. But those topics each spent only one week on the top; with Dragonball (#2) fading a bit, we think KaZaA may be on top until Halloween -- unless September 11 memories drive enough searches.

MOON MEN: The MTV Video Music Awards (#30) are back after a year absence. The broadcast also sparks search traffic for one-time Lycos 50 staple Christina Aguilera, who wore a micro-skirt and a halter top that halted a bit too early. Aguilera, who once spent 43 straight weeks on the Lycos 50, is #61 this week. Her new album, appropriately called Stripped, finally arrives on September 17.

ANOTHER SCANDAL: Venezuelan soap actress Roxana Diaz is the latest victim of an online sex tape scandal, although she doesn't have enough searches to make the Lycos 50. Two weeks ago, a video arrived on the Net showing footage of Diaz having sex with boyfriend (and fellow actor) Jorge Reyes. Supposedly, the content is stronger than the Pamela Anderson/Tommy Lee tape. Ye gods!

SHORT SUBJECTS: The bloom is already off the Anna Nicole Smith show, with the star falling off the Lycos 50 this week... Though they fall off the list, deposed radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony still get plenty of searches (They're #52)... Vin Diesel (#34) is starting to fade a bit, but can he match the actor record of Orlando Bloom, who stayed on the list for seven weeks?

NEW THIS WEEK: U.S. Open, MTV Video Awards, Serena Williams, college football, World Trade Center, Christmas, Napster.

DROPOUTS: Barbie, Anna Nicole Smith, Neopets, Elvis Presley, Opie and Anthony, Oprah Winfrey, Listen4ever.com.

ONE YEAR AGO: A plane crash claimed the life of R&B singer Aaliyah, who hit #1 on the Lycos 50. She still gets plenty of searches, occasionally making our list of the top ten musicians.

TOMORROW: You pick the NFL games.
