What the Arrows Mean: Up and down arrows indicate movement from last week's Lycos 50. A black dot means no change in position.

What the Numbers Mean: The first number indicates chart position last week. (An x means the term was not on the chart last week.) The second number indicates the number of consecutive weeks the item has been on the Lycos 50.

Princess Di, Two Years Later

Princess Diana is back in web surfers' hearts on the second anniversary of her death. Some say her memory is fading, others say she needs a permanent memorial. (Or is that saying the same thing?) Lycos has Diana photos here plus a full celebrity guide if you're in that mood.

RISING STARS

Here are five of the fastest-rising search terms from Lycos users in the past 48 hours:

LFO

Here's yet another hot boy band in the 'N Sync mode. LFO just crooned on the Summer Music Mania '99 TV special along with Christina Aguilera (see yesterday's report). Formerly known as the LyteFunkieOnes (good move on that name change, boys), the group is unrelated to the defunct British electronica band of the same name. LFO's single "Summer Girls" is #3 on the Billboard charts this week.

NFL

The preseason groin pulls are ending and NFL searches are rising accordingly. We've got full NFL news coverage along with celebrity guides to some of the NFL's leading stars.

A hot related term: fantasy football. If that's your bag, you may want to check out the Lycos Sports Exchange fantasy game.

Earnhardt

Dale Earnhardt and Terry Labonte got in a nasty scrape on the final turn of the Nascar Goodys 500 last weekend. Earnhardt took the checkered flag, Labonte wiped out, tempers flared, and surfers are still hunting for juicy info. Here's the original news article, and here's our full Nascar coverage courtesy of Go Racing.

Wuhrer

Former Ford model, former MTV VJ, former star of Beastmaster II, and now... singing star. Kari Wuhrer is a personality-turned-actress-turned-singer in the Jennifer Lopez mode, and her popularity seems to be on a similar upswing. We've got photos and a biography courtesy of RollingStone.com.

Vivian Hsu

Seems to be a big day for personality-turned-actress-turned singers. Vivian Hsu is the waiflike star who got her start by winning an "Entertainment Beauty Girl Contest" on Taiwan TV in 1990. Since then she's become famous in Asia as an actress, pop singer and all-around "beauty girl." Why she's suddenly hot this week, we aren't sure; could be her new film Lau Man Hok Sun ("Rogue Student") is making a splash in Taiwan.

Any ideas? Drop us a line on the boards.

One to Watch

The movie Molly has been generating plenty of searches in recent weeks, sometimes the sign of a hit in the making. The film stars Elisabeth Shue as a mentally-challenged adult, which in the 1990s makes her automatic Oscar material -- just ask Tom "Forrest Gump" Hanks, Dustin "Rain Man" Hoffman, Jack "As Good As It Gets" Nicholson, etc. Molly opens on September 17.

    Mystery Terms

Here are three terms that have been getting heavy traffic, and we have no idea why:

    Grape

    Bubble

    Cher

We know why Cher was hot six months ago; but why is she spiking this week? Meanwhile, 'grape' and 'bubble' have us completely baffled. We're also still curious about yesterday's terms Geller and Duisenberg.

Have an idea? Drop us a line on the boards You won't regret it.

    Case Closed

Alert reader Jon L. of Massachusetts has this to say about the recent rise of Barbie queries:

"A news story appeared over the weekend about a prosthesis researcher using Barbie knee joints in synthetic human finger joints. Seem to work better than anything manufacturers could make..." Go, girl!
