Drugs in the News: Cialis and Levitra
August 27, 2003

Viagra is one of the most-commonly searched drugs on Lycos. Right now, it holds a colossal 96% of the U.S. market for impotence drugs. But that will change this fall when it faces two rivals. One of them, Cialis has been getting searches for a while; the other, Levitra, surged on our search logs last week.

The reason was that Levitra finally got FDA approval last week, and was the subject of a ton of news stories. Cialis, which has been available in other countries, should be getting FDA approval in the next month or two.

Levitra searches were pretty stable -- and small -- but last week they jumped, and now they are four times higher than before. They are still only about one-third as high as searches for Viagra. Cialis searches are about one-fifth as high as those for Viagra.

Get ready for a battle of advertising and competing claims. The makers of Levitra say that it acts more quickly than Viagra, a statement disputed by Viagra manufacturer Pfizer. Cialis is supposed to remain effective for 36 hours, instead of four to five hours for Viagra and Levitra.

Viagra has deals with NASCAR and baseball, while Levitra has a huge deal with the NFL and will begin airing ads with former NFL coach Mike Ditka.

According to this article, "In countries where all three drugs are approved -- including Germany, France, Britain and Australia -- Cialis outsells Levitra, although Viagra still dominates those markets." Cialis advertising emphasizes the possibility of a more normal sex life because of the pill's longer duration.

TOMORROW: Freaky Thursday.
