Forget George W. Bush vs. Saddam Hussein. The Internet public is much more interested in Clinton Portis vs. Olandis Gary.
Fantasy football is #6 on the Lycos 50 this week, and NFL is #7. Yes, that's right, more people are searching for fantasy football than the real thing. Even college football is hot, almost making the Lycos 50 at #54.
FOX Sports has three different fantasy football games for you to try, including a weekly challenge and a system to manage your own league with your friends.
ILL VIBE: West Nile Virus makes it two weeks in the top slot as Americans continue to seek information about this possible epidemic. File-swapping program KaZaA continues its rise, taking over the #2 slot from Dragonball This is the first time Dragonball has fallen below #2 since May 14, when it was behind Spider-Man and Mother's Day. Spider-Man, by the way, falls off the Lycos 50 after 21 weeks.
KaZaA isn't the only free music search term to gain momentum this week. A new version of Morpheus has that program moving up 11 slots to #16. And the Chinese pirated music site Listen4ever.com comes out of nowhere to make the Lycos 50 this week. 13 record companies had filed a lawsuit a week and a half ago to get the site to shut down, only to find out that the site went down on its own last week. That didn't stop ravenous free music fans from getting curious, though, and it is possible the site may reappear somewhere else.
NOT A SHOCK: A couple of times over the past year, the Lycos 50 has written about the skyrocketing popularity of shock jocks Opie and Anthony (#31). This week the rocket ride crashed to earth.
The New York-based radio team was fired by Infinity Broadcasting last Thursday after broadcasting a live account of a couple allegedly having sex in St. Patrick's Cathedral. This was part of a regular feature where couples could win prizes for having sex in risky places.
To nobody's surprise, the stunt made most New York Catholics pretty incensed, and the FCC threatened to revoke the license of O&A flagship WNEW. Infinity pulled the team off the air, leading O&A fans around the country to wonder where their favorite radio voices had gone -- and to look for news about the incident on Lycos.
Of course, the Infinity bosses should have expected something like this to happen eventually. After all, Opie and Anthony were fired from their last station for an April Fool's Day prank reporting the death of Boston mayor Thomas "Mumbles" Menino.
POP LIFE: With the competition ending this week, American Idol (#8) enters the top 10 for the first time. Kelly Clarkson gets half of the queries for the three finalists, more than Justin Guarini (32%) or Nikki McKibbin (18%).
SCARED YET?: As we expected, Halloween (#32) searches arrive on the Lycos 50 this week, one week later than usual. But costume (#45) searches arrive two weeks earlier than usual. And just around the corner -- Christmas now at #61.
HOT ACTRESSES: They don't make the Lycos 50, but two models-turned-actresses are getting a lot of interest online. One is veteran Elizabeth Hurley, finishing #56 due to interest in Serving Sara as well as her recent pregnancy. The other is Rachel Roberts, the unknown model who plays the digitally created Simone in the film S1m0ne. The mysterious nature of Roberts' role (is it her, or a computer graphic based on her?) has Roberts getting more searches than other 2002 breakout actresses like xXx's Asia Argento or Blue Crush's Kate Bosworth.
SHORT SUBJECTS: Oprah Winfrey (#33) is making news with an announcement she will work only 22 weeks out of each year until her show goes off the air in 2005... Japanese animated saga Gundam (#48) is back on the list thanks to the arrival on Cartoon Network of the series G Gundam... Searches continue to climb for the Spanish group Las Ketchup and their song "Asereje," spotlighted as One to Watch two weeks ago... Let the memorials to September 11 (#50) begin.
NEW THIS WEEK: California Lottery, Opie and Anthony, Halloween, Oprah Winfrey, Listen4ever.com, costumes, Gundam, Martha Stewart, September 11.
DROPOUTS: Spider-Man, Atkins Diet and diets, PGA Championship, sportscaster Jill Arrington, porn star turned documentary subject Ginger Lynn, Cage-Presley wedding, Jason Priestley, Perseid meteor shower.
ONE YEAR AGO: A $295 million jackpot made Powerball the first lottery to ever hit the top spot on the Lycos 50. This week's hot lottery is the California Lottery (#10), which split a $122 million jackpot between four winners on Saturday.
TOMORROW: Fair play.
