You may remember a month ago we ran a list of the top entertainment searches so far this year, including the top TV shows. And the #1 live-action, fiction show -- what we think of as "conventional television" -- was The Sopranos.
That's pretty good for a cable program. While it has never made the Lycos 50, The Sopranos got more searches in the first half of the year than X-Files, or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That's moving up: in 2000 it was only #12 among prime-time shows searched on Lycos.
Here were the ten Sopranos cast members who received the most searches in the first half of 2001:
1) Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow)
2) Drea De Matteo (Adriana)
3) Annabella Sciorra (Gloria)
4) Jason Cerbone (Jackie Jr.)
5) James Gandolfini (Tony)
6) Edie Falco (Carmela)
7) Steve Van Zandt (Silvio)
8) Nancy Marchand (Tony's Mom)
9) Joe Pantoliano (Ralphie)
10) Michael Imperioli (Christopher)
Well, we expected high searches for the young ladies, but we must admit that's a nice showing by Jason Cerbone. Of course, he won't be plying his trade on The Sopranos anymore after being whacked in the season's last episode, but he could have a nice career in store.
Jamie-Lynn Sigler wasn't just the hottest Soprano for the first half of 2001, she's the hottest Soprano now as well. Even hotter, in fact, thanks to her tarted-up appearance on the cover this month's Maxim. Her searches tripled last week, making her more popular than, for example, "most downloaded woman" Cindy Margolis.
You will be hearing a lot more from Miss Sigler in the future. She is planning a singing career with an album coming soon. In fact, you have probably already heard her voice; that's her singing "I'm Coming Out" in the Levi's "singing bellybuttons" ad.
We'll admit, we did have ulterior motives for this article. We wanted to point out one of the coolest Lycos chats we've seen, this upcoming Monday. Lycos users will be able to chat with clubs, aka Uncle Junior, at 9pm Eastern, 6pm Pacific. He'll be talking about The Sopranos and about his new album of original big band tunes and Italian standards.
MONDAY: Hot spots of 2001 vs. hot spots of 2000.
