Fall's Breakout TV Hit
Could Be Alias

Predicting television hits based on search traffic is a tough project. While movie hits get significant search traffic months before their premieres, new TV hits don't receive too many searches even after they premiere. It often takes a long time and a lot of hype to reach the kind of cult status that gets a show a lot of searches, the status of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files.

Last year, only one show really broke out of the TV pack as far as Lycos searches go: Dark Angel. That search traffic was mostly due to the popularity of star Jessica Alba, who even spent three weeks on the Lycos 50.

This year, it looks like the breakout show might be the very similar Alias. Like Dark Angel, it's an action-based drama starring a comely young woman. And like Dark Angel, our prediction is based on the popularity of that female star: Jennifer Garner.

The fact is, searches for Alias are very low right now. But searches for Garner have tripled since Pearl Harbor (in which she has a small role) premiered in May. They're only about half of what Alba searches were at this time last year, but they are increasing steadily. If Garner popularity continues to increase, Alias popularity should follow.

The show will air Sundays at 9pm on ABC. In it, Garner plays Sydney Bristow, a "vivacious, athletic grad student" (aren't we all) who is also a secret government agent. She's sort of a combination between Felicity and Emma Peel from The Avengers.

Garner is hoping the third time is the charm when it comes to TV success. She starred in the failed 1998 show Significant Others as well as 1999's horrible Party of Five spinoff Time of Your Life. Her husband has had much more TV success; she's married to Scott Foley, who plays Noel on Felicity.

TOMORROW: Soprano fever!
