Who the heck is Tony Hawk?
He's the Sultan of Skate, that's who.
First things first: we aren't going to lard this report with lots of fake-hip skater terms like thrashin', gnarly, mongo-foot, etc., etc. So don't get your hopes up.
But we must note that Mr. Hawk is a true Web search oddity: he's consistently a huge deal on our search logs, yet the general public hardly seems to be aware of him.
Hawk was ranked an amazing #10 on our recent Lycos 50 Most-Searched Athletes list. That put him ahead of Kobe Bryant, Dale Earnhardt, Babe Ruth, Mike Tyson, Mia Hamm... even Tiger Woods. Skateboarding itself has been hot on our lists all summer; it's #37 on the lastest Lycos 50.
Hawk also has a video game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, which is fabulously popular judging by user searches. Plus he has his own impressively large line of merchandise. (We don't count searches for the game as searches for the man, incidentally -- the two are separate.)
Hawk is a fascinating topic, to be sure. So how come you never read about him in the mainstream press? We don't know. But we do know that he'll be chatting on Lycos on Wednesday night. If you'd like to get in on the thrashin' action (oops!) please visit our clubs, won't you?
